Good old fashioned Spin Off Thread - Wheelchairs in airports

Anyone noticing the what seems to be relatively recent rash of half the damn people on a plane using the wheelchair service?
I travel / fly a lot and you would always see one or maybe even two elderly on a flight that used the wheelchair service to get through the airport. Not hating on them at all. Glad they can get out and fly to vacation or see family.
But lately, I get in the jetway and there are a line of wheelchairs waiting. I am convinced that people have figured out they get to pre-board if using a wheelchair so they get one even if not needed. It would seem like there should be a charge or some kind of requirement / document check to reserve one.

The last flight I was on a probably 50 something lady used a wheelchair. There was clearly nothing wrong with her other than being a fat frick. The best part is she had like 6 or 7 family members she tried to get on in preboarding with her (Southwest). Much to my surprise the gate agent actually didn't let any of them on, they were of course C group.

Eh as long as it is just them and not their entire party I have no issues with it. Did recently see a group trying to board together out of New Orleans on Delta. Lady obviously needed one but she had 15 in her crew and they only let the people sitting next to her board as well. Rest had to wait until called.

I’m gonna wait for Oweo’s take on this one.

I've noticed it. I fly almost weekly for work. I'm amazed at the abled bodies being pushed around the airports.

Easiest way to get around an airport when you’re hammered

Zero problem with that.

Have not seen this. Maybe the airlines are wising up to the scam. One can only hope.

Southwest did a great job handling mine, no damage at all.
I’ve heard horror stories about United and American though.
And I’ll agree about those taking advantage, it pissed me off waiting in line next to able bodied fatties

About half the passengers in any flight to/from India use wheelchairs. Many times this is because elderly parents of Indian Americans can't navigate the airports due to lack on fluency in English or lack of experience in going through major international airports. Here is an article about this. I guess others have started doing this too.
