Advice on negotiating more vacation time

Two years ago during this COVID fiasco, employers could skimp on benefits when attracting new talent since there was so many people seeking work and so few jobs. Offering less than normal vacation time relative to years of service was one of them.
Any OT-ers here ever gone to the boss man and request additional vacation time? How did it go?
I'm not talking about someone with 4 years getting ahead of themselves. Talking about folks with 10, 15, 20 years.

Tell the boss you are willing to take a cut in pay.

I just took a new job with a big company. I was told no, they don't do that. 15 years and management. Instead they gave me a signing bonus to make up for it.
Smaller companies seem to be more flexible in my experience. Last position you were able to get service credits for key employees (ex. extra week).

How much PTO do you have?
Are there rules in place already, ie 5 years = extra week?
What type of job are we talking? Blue collar? White collar? Salary? Hourly?
Step 1 figure out what the average is for that role and what you want. Then ask. Worst they could say is no, and at that point you can begin the job search.

Just made 20 years with my company and I’m capped at 5 weeks of PTO. I rolled A week year ago so I have been starting every year with 6 weeks because I always leave a week for emergency. I probably take another couple of weeks of one days or 1.5 days every year because I’m in sales

My company wouldn’t give me anything extra but my boss is don’t ask don’t tell. I have to be somewhere 8:00 to 11:00 AM Monday and Wednesday. After that I’m on my own.

quote:Yes. There are rules in place. But employers sometimes don't give new hires credit for years of service in their industry. In that case, you can have a 15 year person getting vacay equivalent to a 1 year person because that's the current employers policy.

You have to get your deal going in. Afterwards it’s too late.

Honestly I have no idea how much vacation I have. I would guess 4-6 weeks formally? Over the past 8 years (two companies, same manager) it doesn’t matter as long as you produce.
Generally I take 2-3 full weeks a year and a whole bunch of random one and two-days a year.
I answer the phone and respond to emails on my one and two-days. I answer the important phone calls and respond to the important emails on my longer days off.

You imply you have 10-15-20 years of service. If this is true shop around. You might find you can make a lot more elsewhere with better benefits.
If that is true but you want to stay with your employer tell what you’ve been offered and would like them to match.
Be prepared to leave if they don’t want to match.

I’m the same way.

Ask for something even more valuable. They’ll say no of course, but people hate saying no 2x in a row. Let them think that giving you want you really wanted the whole time is just some silly consolation prize.

"I'll need 5 weeks or I'm out"
Be prepared to be out. If you are worth it you'll get the extra time. If not, you shouldn't ask in the first place.

Ideal time to ask would have been the past year. Labor market was extremely tight and competitive (in favor of employees).
Depending on your industry, timing may still be good. But it is definitely starting to shift back to employers holding the cards with the recession.
Ask soon and lay out the facts. If it is known to everyone you got subpar Pto it should be a straightforward conversation.
