Mere hours before the Mark Twain Prize winner was set to step on to the stage at the Minnesota metropolis’ First Avenue, organizers pulled the plug on the sold out show. Citing a backlash against Chappelle’s perceived transphobic remarks, First Avenue management cancelled his protested performance at the venue and moved him to the nearby Varsity Theater.

For those of you living under a rock or requiring a cultural anthropology lesson, First Avenue is the club featured heavily in Prince’s iconic Purple Rain film from 1984. Though First Avenue has never official been declared a historical landmark, as many believe it should be, the venue celebrated its 50th anniversary back in 2020. Over his career, Chappelle has performed at the venue repeatedly.

Next week the club’s employees will be protesting the club itself and demanding collective ownership.

Eh.. it's the free market in action.

As long as government isn't blocking him from accessing venues, I've got no issue with venues blocking people based on their beliefs.

If a Trump-supporting venue wants to block Biden supporters, it's their economic right (as much as it's a bad business decision).

Customers should vote with their feet and not visit the club in punishment. It's the same with that baker case - that baker had every right to refuse service and I'm not going to hear otherwise.

The venue itself is a service.

It can refuse entry to anyone or refuse to host a show or heck, move a show to another venue.

The show itself is sold out but the venue itself has the right to refuse service.

So, they tried to silence a Black man?

They should be hounded out of polite society for their racism.

Why did they book him in the first place? It’s not like his specials had just aired or that the world didn’t realize he wasn’t woke until just now. I’d be pissed if I was Chappelle, this seems like an idiot move by the club management.

Yeah because that’s worked out so well in the past for other service companies such as the bakers in Colorado who didn’t want to bake the cake for the gay wedding.

Interesting. If they advertised the show and customers paid money in good faith, it seems a contract might have been violated.

This. Either stand by the booking, or don't book him in the first place. This woke outrage has been aimed at him for years.

Chances are, they could endure the verbal backlash and the boycotts.. but they couldn't endure the threats to burn their shite down..and you know they were being threatened. Every time the LGBT (political
movement) community goes against something or someone, they use threats and intimidation.
