After the coronavirus pandemic and the rise of monkeypox cases, news of another virus can trigger nerves globally. The highly infectious Marburg virus has been reported in the West African country of Ghana this week, according to the World Health Organization.

Two unrelated people died after testing positive for Marburg in the southern Ashanti region of the country, the WHO said Sunday, confirming lab results from Ghana's health service. The highly infectious disease is similar to Ebola and has no vaccine.

"Health authorities have responded swiftly, getting a head start preparing for a possible outbreak. This is good because without immediate and decisive action, Marburg can easily get out of hand," said the WHO's regional director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti.

Fatality rates from the disease can reach nearly 90%, according to the WHO.

Marburg has probably been transmitted to people from African fruit bats as a result of prolonged exposure from people working in mines and caves that have Rousettus bat colonies. It is not an airborne disease.

Isn’t this a variant of Ebola? I might actually worry about this if I were you.

Ehhh….Ebola viruses are a bit trickier than that. Infectious blood pours out of the mouth and anus all over bystanders. It’s not a matter of aerosol droplets needing to get into the respiratory tract at the right incubation stage. The blood goes every where and because people would like to help but are not always obeying proper protocols, even 10 people are trying to assist a person who is bleeding out, it can be really easy for all 10 to get infected.

Nope. It's Marburgvirus, not Ebolavirus. They're distinct viruses, each with their own subtypes.

They're both filoviruses and the symptoms are very similar, though. Once you're bleeding from your eyes and a-hole the difference seems kind of moot.

Big pharma and government grifters just came. Shouldn't be hard at all to get one to market since new vaccines don't even have to be all that effective to yield a windfall.

That's my standard Tuesday morning after two dozen chicken wings and three pitchers of Miller Lite during football season.

This is what I was referring to when I said yes. I guess the term “variant” threw me off.

I think we’re safe in Louisiana.

Seems like you have to practically live in a guano filled cave, and the batshit has to be from a specific bat species.
