A TikToker who sent the city of Raleigh, North Carolina into a panic last year after his deadly zebra cobra snake escaped from his care is now asking for forgiveness as he speaks out for the first time since the incident.

Chris Gifford, 22, a TikTok-famous snake handler with over half a million followers on the platform, lost one of his African zebra cobras and the snake spent months on the loose before it was finally found on the front porch of a Raleigh home in July 2021.

Gifford was hit with over 40 misdemeanor charges, ordered to pay hefty fines and forced to surrender over 75 of his reptiles following the frightening ordeal, according to WRAL.

“It was on a lady’s porch. Imagine if a little kid or something of that nature had happened?” Gifford told WRAL, speaking out for the first time since the frenzy.

Just a reminder. There is no constitutionally protected right to own exotic, non-native snakes in the US. And assholes like this are why the Everglades are infested with Burmese Pythons.

This kind of shite could frick up the ecosystem. Glad he only lost one, and it was caught.

Gifford was ultimately ordered by a judge to turn over $35,000 worth of snakes to the county and pay $13,162 in restitution for the resources needed to track the cobra down, WRAL reported. The seized snakes are to be used for research and anti-venom development.

“Mostly this is just an apology because there are no excuses for what happened,” he said.

He is barred from owning any venomous snakes until August. He said he plans to begin collecting snakes again eventually, but won’t keep them at his parents’ house.

I can assure you, if that had shown up on my porch, he would not have had to surrender a live snake……..

Here's an analogy to parallel the subject line:

Voters apolgize to their fellow U.S. citizens after putting a greedy, creepy snake into the office of the Presidency.

He is really really lucky someone didn’t get big cause it would have either caused a possible amputation to save the limb or a death from the venom

I think these people are weirdos. I don't get the fascination with having venomous snakes.

Not true. It’s assholes that don’t know how big they get, and then say frick this, I don’t wanna take care of the snake anymore, that are the problem. This dude probably does research on them and stuff. I had an exotic snake, that got out of its cage somehow, and we were never able to find it again. Granted it was just a harmless Honduran Milk Snake, that probably got killed rather quickly. But this guy isn’t purposely letting snakes go. That’s how the Python problem started, was people purposely letting them go.

This. I just don't get it. Do they get some kind of rush from these animals?

If it was just them and the snakes and there was no way the snakes could get out I wouldn't give a shite. They could have 10 thousand of them. But when someone gets them just to have them and they don't have much experience handling them.. And they get out, that's putting people... especially kids at risk. There has to be something else they are into besides having venomous snakes.

People were freaking the frick out about this around here last year. Our nanny city council just passed an ordinance banning “exotic” animals because of this

The fascination is that they are fascinating. I used to love watching my pet pygmy rattler tag a mouse, then watch the life twitch out of the mouse before it was swallowed.

However, I kept that shite on lockdown. I rigged up 4 latches on the enclosure to keep it sealed, and kept that in my gameroom (converted garage) with the door locked. I always wanted a gaboon viper, but I’m not keeping anything whose bite means almost certain death. When I had my 5 pythons/boas, their enclosures were in my house and each had a single latch. 4 times I had one escape its enclosure, though I always found them. Snakes can and will escape. I wouldn’t even put my dog at risk with a venomous snake in the house.

Catching and handling venomous snakes is very much a rush. First couple I caught, I was very tentative. Now I enjoy the frick out of it and want to grab every one I see.

How could that not be a rush?

Thought it was because they were cute and fun as little sneks, then they became too much of a burden so the owners released them into the Everglades.

Yes, but not nearly as dangerous as a nice set.
