If I remember correctly, Notre Dame had 3 1st and goal situations near the South endzone and failed on all three 4th down attempts.

You are correct. We were screaming "4th and one Ara. Go for it!" Stuffed. Great night in Tiger Stadium.

My first game in Tiger Stadium. I still have the ticket stub and game program.

I think he meant “did NOT score!” because they didn’t! I was there, too. It was the first drive of the game. Holding them changed everything. ND didn’t score until much later in the game. They made a two point conversion, but the game was already over by then.
Andy Hamilton dazzled their secondary. They never knew where he was. At one point, the ND All-American defending him (Clarence Ellis) made a complete 360 looking for him.
At the time, it was the worst defeat anyone had put on an Ara Parsegian ND team. And the crowd was large and hostile and out for revenge because everyone KNEW the game the year before in South Bend had been stolen by the officials. I was at that one, too.

Year before also a great defensive game.
Notre Dame won 3 to 0.
Yes
And if I remember correctly, there were two very questionable pass interference calls against us that allowed ND to kick the FG.

that game was on national TV at night. One of the rare games that was televised back then, by ABC.
I remember watching as a 7-year old. Unbelievable game, incredible emotion. Still gives me chills.
Hard to believe those players are about 70 years old now.

Estay was my childhood favorite.

Was there. Crowd was incredible.
—Back then if you acted like you belonged on the field, you just walked thru the field gates. Got to meet several ND cheerleaders that way.

Few thoughts:
We had already lost 3 games before playing ND (Colorado, OM, and Bama) so our season was disappointing. Yet, TS did not disappoint. It was a big deal playing ND.
SI's featured weekly CFB article covered the game. It speaks highly of TS.
Estay, my dad called him Crockett, played one of the best games a DL ever played for us.
Amazing how great CFB and TS can be with relatively little promotion and how regularly bland it's become with all the corporate interests and on. You know.

Good point, LSU and the TAF have been slowly selling off/killing the TS game day experience for years, imo, NIL will be the nails in the coffin.

Andy Hamilton made a chump out of their All American DB - Clarence Ellis

Greatest game I’ve ever witnessed in Tiger Stadium.

I was 15 at the time and this is one of my top 5 LSU Games at Tiger Stadium of all time.
1-LSU v Florida State (Oranges flew)
2-LSU v Auburn (Earthquake)
3-LSU v USC (We were robbed)
4-LSU v ND (28-8)
5-LSU v UGA (2018) UGA fans were stunned
Man there are some others that were close but I guess that is my top 5 I attended.
