I was pulled over once coming back from the bars on highland by a lsu cop on highland ..

was coming back from a night out in the wee hours and got pulled over just as I got on campus, I had come from Tigerland and at the time Nicholson transitioned from 45 to 30 right as you entered campus, the cop was pretty nice and I normally am really cool in those situations, he said I was going 50 in the 30 and I was positive that I wasn't, I lit in to him, believe me that is not the way I am or was, but for some reason I was just convinced I was right and he was trying to screw me, we argued for what seemd like half an hour, mostly me ranting about how I was right and he was wrong, he listened patiently and when I was done he pretty much said calm down kid there's a number of things I could write you up for, mainly DUI but I'm not, where are you going? I lied and said I was going to Hatcher because it was about 100 yds. away and I knew I could get into a friend's room, he just said to be more careful when I'm out driving around after a night of partying and went on about his bidness

Even David Duke was allowed to spew his crap.... Got heckled, but was given his 1st Amendment right to be an idiot....
I guess back then (unlike now) we were smart enough to think for ourselves and decide what was BS...

2nd semester at LSU I was walking with my buddy and his girlfriend to Grace King hall in the horseshoe to take care of some bill. Well this dude and some chick are flying in this little red car through the horseshoe drive. I push my buddy out of the way and do a backwards bunny hop onto the hood of this car. Piece of shite car had a broken antenna that went into my right arm at the elbow tearing a big hole. Buddy and his girl took me to the infirmary to get stitched up. Unbeknownst to me his girlfriend calls campus police on the infirmary phone and tells them what happened and she somehow remembered the license plate number. Campus cops had the dude arrested in less than an hour. We all had to give statements and that shite went to court. On the day of the trial the dudes lawyer offered me 2 grand for my pain and suffering if I dropped the charges. I didn’t think twice. Took the money and partied like a rock star my sophomore year.

70s was probably better because there was no fear of AIDS

This is exactly what I came here to say. In the early and mid 80s, AIDS was known to be sexually transmitted by any kind of sex and there was no treatment and no cure. It did make dating sex more of a challenge. Otherwise, there was no parental supervision at all and no cell phone cameras or social media to enlarge the class of witnesses. Those two things right there made life significantly more free and fun.

I had Dr. William Clarke, Professor of Greek/Latin in Spring 1980 for a seminar class in a small classroom in Allen Hall.
First day he sits on the edge of the desk in front of the room, Marlboro Light in his left hand, Bic lighter in his right.
He asks, "Does anyone mind if I smoke?" He waits two beats, flicks the Bic and proceeds to chain smoke for the next 3.5 months of the seminar.

There was plenty of poon to be had, but it wasn’t like the ‘free love” times of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Remember that AIDS arrived in the 80s and it was not necessarily limited to particular demographics and social groups as it is now. Catching that was a death sentence back then.

Something else cool that would never happen now was DWI training on campus. I can’t remember if it was state police or locals though. Anyway every year the police would have a class about recognizing drunk people during field sobriety tests. It was in Pleasant Hall and my roommate had a campus job there and got me and my best friend in. What would happen is they would get a bunch of student volunteers put them in a big banquet room with every beer and liquor imaginable and tell them to get as wasted or not wasted as they wanted. After 3 or so hours they would send in the cops to see if they could figure out who was shite hammered or not (bartender kept track of who had what and how much). My buddy took total advantage of this situation and drank like a psycho. He drank way more than anybody else. None of the cops thought he was drunk. The bartender was laughing and said that dude drank twice as much as anybody else and fooled everyone of you.

This. Blowjobs were pretty easy to get but fricking took more work. People were freaked out about AIDS.

1982-85. I really do not recall anyone being concerned about AIDS then. Hell I got laid, it couldn't have been that hard.

I had several great jobs then but the best was working the door checking IDs at the Bengal, got paid to drink and meet girls.

Spring Break was the above...on steroids

Spring Break in the 80s in Fort Walton Beach was the type of event on which they based the cliche' spring break movies.

The Ramada Regency, which has gone through several names and I believe it is now called The Island, was the center of the Spring Break universe. People would cram 8 and up in a room. You could show up with a toothbush and swimsuit and get all the drinks and hookups you wanted. In 1984 they had Heart on the Beach and MTV was there back when they played music. We would normally choose the Carousel down the beach which had a bit more breathing room. We would make our own simple Jungle Juice in gallon jugs and it was very popular and effective with the young ladies.

82-86.

So many memories in this thread!

It was glorious! Whoever said “You wouldn’t understand…” was spot on. These are the highlights only there was so much more. I hated to leave.

The best part was the independence. If you f’d it up you fixed it, or you didn’t. No helicopter Mommy’s waiting to catch you when you fell. We grew up. It was glorious. Truly the best 4 years of my life.

Late 80's, Tigerland was still safe and Tiger Plaza was probably the nicest apt complex in town. Drinking age was 18 and Tiger Burger had great burgers. Brewbachers was a rare treat because we were broke and meal plans kept us from starving. Parents didn't know what we were doing on day to day basis and could only pray that we were being smart and safe. You had to register for classes in person at the field house by getting your cards punched and tailgating was still family friendly in the shadow of Tiger Stadium. Cortana Mall was still popular and traffic was manageable. Murphy's, Mr Gatti's, Silver Moon. Walk-On's was a cow pasture and the original "Box" was still rocking. Everybody rode the shuttle from Tigerland to class and the only ATM that I can remember was at the student union.

That center courtyard at the Regency was nuts to buts the whole Spring Break.
Cash's had the great wet t-shirt contest.

ATMs weren’t very prevalent.

I remember when I needed cash, writing a check out to “cash”, and cashing it at the Union. Max limit was $25.
