So I’m going to El Paso and doing a big loop and doing White Sands, Carlsbad, and Guadalupe Mountain NPs. I’ll also be spending a day or two in El Paso.

I might be the first ever to be excited about taking a trip to El Paso. Any restaurant recommendations in the city?

Kiki's Restaurant & Bar is a classic place with truly excellent Tex-Mex. I recommend a brisket machaca.

This is what I was coming here to post. I traveled to El Paso for about 4 months in 2015 for a project with El Paso Electric, and this was the first restaurant that came to mind when I read the title. It's worth the short drive from the downtown area.

Kiki's was on "The best thing I ever ate" TV show a few years ago. Wife and I went to eat there last year and it was outstanding. I will go again again next time in EP.
Cattlemans Steakhouse at Indian Cliffs was great and the views/atmosphere were top notch.

No recommenndations on food, but I do highly recommend the Dripping Springs area outside of Las Cruces if you want a pretty hike.

Chopes about halfway between EP and La Cruces. On the scenic route. If you pull up and think “this can’t be it” then congrats you’re at the right place.

Fun fact: Stateline BBQ is the same as County Line bbq in Austin

Ended up at Andele for mexican food in Las Cruces.

Ate at Mad Jack's bbq in Cloudcroft.

In El Paso, I ate bbq at Desert Oak and tacos at Don Cuco.

All were excellent. El Paso...nice city, could live there.

Looking at doing this same trip in April or May. How was it from a National Park aspect?

If you get a chance try D.H. Lescombes winery in Cruces. Loved that place. At the very least grab a bottle or two of wine to take home

Andele’s Dog House in Las Cruces, NM. About 45 minutes from El Paso.
Best pork tacos Al Carbon you’ll ever have. Homemade chips and salsa bar. Worth the drive.

I highly second both Kiki's and Cattleman's. Go early enough to see the sun set at Cattleman's. Steaks were great as was the pineapple slaw. After eating at Kiki's we enjoyed it so much we got some to take with us in the RV. Enjoy.

I mean, I thought they were great. I did Alkali Flat in White Sands, McKittrick Canyon and Guadalupe Peak in Guadalupe Mountains, and I was able to get a guided tour in Carlsbad Caverns where I also hiked both down and up the Natural Entrance instead of using the elevator.

Never experienced excessive heat, nothing was overly crowded, the national park guide in Carlsbad was good. The views were great (I had no experience in Guadalupe Mountains, so it was a pleasant surprise).

Look into the annual pass if you aren't used to paying for NPs.

Chopes

I never expected to see Chopes mentioned on an LSU board. My first time there was back in the day when you could sit in the bar next door, drink 40s, and eat chips and salsa while waiting on your table. Then your server would come round up all the 40s and transfer them to the restaurant side since you couldn't technically carry them out of the bar then bring them in the other building

That was my introduction to chile rellenos and to this day I don't think I've had better.

Also never expected to see Andeles or the Dog House (same owners and mostly the same menu) mentioned. Most tourists go to La Poste or Si Senors.

I prefer the Dog House because of the nice patio. The tacos that T-Bro mentioned are what I have always ordered for 10 years now whenever in town. Just a huge plate of beef or pork, homemade tortillas, beans, and the fixins. Their homemade tortilla chips and salsa bar are also the best I have found in the entire southwest.

I also agree with Tacos Don Cuco mentioned by OP, I used to go to the one on Mesa St all the time when I lived up the road. I would eat there everyday if I could, it is the quintessential Mexican street tacos. Kiki's and L&J are better options if you want a traditional Mexican meal and not just tacos.

None of these places above are the least bit fancy but they are as about as authentic as you can get for southern New Mexican or El Pasoan food, short of going to your abuela'a house.

That’s the location I was at.

Sounds like I made the right choices
