Paulie doesn't take over shite. Tony had a soft spot for him because he'd looked up to Paulie when he was younger, but he's a street guy who wouldn't last long in management.

It's Patsy all the way. Time was on his side.

paulie was already a captain, same as patsy
they are actually the only two captains left, since we dont really know how Sil turned out, he was comatose at the end. Patsy ran off and left Sil at the hit.

It wasnt just the Lupertazzis that had Tony clipped, it was the bosses of the other families that OK'd it. In the scene in the warehouse, Butchie had been the most loyal guy to Phil, then he OKs the hit on Phil because Tony asked?

Nah, the other families wanted peace so Tony takes out Phil and lets his guard down. Then they took out Tony to clear the decks

Butchie and the other guys turn on Phil because he has completely lost the plot. Getting rid of Jersey is something that all the other guys, including Butchie, wanted. But Phil goes into hiding shortly after, leaving his capos sitting ducks until Tony is killed, and then threatens Butchie over the phone. To me it’s clear that it was in New York’s best interest to get rid of the head case Phil, and then clip Tony and be done with it once and for all. Losing Tony, Silvio and Bobby means that the DiMeo family is completely destroyed and all that is left is a glorified crew for Butchie & the Luperrazzi family to absorb.

Butchie/New York takes over.

Butchie gave the okay to whack Phil, and becomes the boss of the Lupertazzi family. Then he double crosses Tony and the lupertazzi family absorbs whatever is left of Jersey. Patsi and Paulie more than likely fall in line to save their own hide.

Good post. Makes a lot of sense.

yeah you are right

Just completed a re-watch and the case for clipping Tony was compelling

He was about to be indicted from Carlo flipping.

The residual animosity from the Phil vs Tony war was only partially resolved with Phil getting clipped.

With Carlo flipped, Chris dead, Sal in a coma, Bobby dead, all Tony had left was Paulie (Capt), Patsy (Capt), Benny, Little Paulie and Walden Belfiore in any type of leadership roles.

That isnt a family, that is a crew and much easier to absorb the Dimeo Family with Tony being gone. Way too much money from construction, unions etc already pouring into New York to trust Paulie to run anything from the Jersey side of things. Paulie didnt want it either, Patsy was a far more competent manage type for Butchie to control

my guess is Patsy saw the writing on the wall after the attempted hit on him and Silvio. NY reached out to him and told him what was coming for Tony, Patsy cut a deal to be the Jersey Capt reporting to Butchie/Little Carmine and Patsy found out Tony was going to be at Holsten's from his son (who got it from Meadow). Patsy gets revenge on Tony for Philly's murder, replaces Tony in the Jersey hierarchy and only has the Carlo indictments to worry about going forward.

Its been awhile, but a few years ago I remember reading that the girl that AJ was hanging out with - when the Pathfinder caught on fire - was the informant. I don't recall if it traced back to Paulie, Butchie, or Patsy. She was the only non-Soprano there when Carmella told Tony over the phone that they were going to Holsteins. That's how Members Only dude knew where they'd be. Could be BS but I remember it making sense at the time I read it.

. This sounds just as, if not more logical.

it is a pretty compelling argument for Rhiannon being a set up girl and AJ being the target

youtuber lays out a good argument

there is a photo of what looks like rhiannon on the wall of Butchie's Salon

Yes, it traced back to Butchie! I also always thought it was weird and kind of off that she seemingly dropped out of the sky at that psych place after AJ tried to kill himself. I wish Chase would address this.

Benny got the shite kicked out of him by Artie.

He could never be a boss.

Didn't Christophah throw him out a window as well or was that someone else?

I wonder if the writers ever considered an “AJ redeems himself arc” to become an actual mobster.

I know that would go completely against the story telling of the entire series, but it would have been interesting to see Tony respond to having a son that was a clear heir apparent, whether that’s what he wanted for his kid or not.

Christopher threw little Paulie out of a window…that’s what caused big Paulie to run that Caddy all through Christopher’s freshly landscaped yard.

“Frick him and the Caddy he rode in on”

This. Phil was correct in stating that the NJ crew was a glorified crew. With Chris and Bobby dead, Paulie perhaps would run it but he was going through his existential crisis. The only other option is Philly. However...

Butch doesn't respect the DiMeo family and I'm willing to bet he absorbs the remaining members of the family and they become part of the NY crime family.

Tony Soprano : [in their safe house] How many fricking times I've told you it's an SUV watch where you park off road the Cadillac converter and the dry vegetation

Anthony 'A.J.' Soprano, Jr. : I didn't see the leaves

Tony Soprano : [shouting at AJ] You can grill fricking steaks on that converter, I told you!

Carmela Soprano : If there was children playing in those leaves, you'd run them over?

Anthony 'A.J.' Soprano, Jr. : [confused] I guess?

Tony Soprano : You're going to get cute now?

you know they gathered RICO evidence from him before he was whacked, he just cant testify to it, same as Ray Curto

but they can still gather the evidence from a dead informant and try to corroborate by testimony from others

By the end it was just a few old guys left. I said before that when Tony was hiding out with his trusted henchmen there was less firepower in that house than many of my suburban dad neighbors have. Those last few guys just get absorbed.
