Multiple sources on Friday told Baseball America that Paul Mainieri has emerged as the initial target to replace Link Jarrett as coach at Notre Dame.

The move would be a homecoming for Mainieri, 64. He coached Notre Dame from 1995-2006 before leaving for Louisiana State, where he won the 2009 national championship. He retired at the end of last season after 15 years at LSU, in part citing neck pains and headaches that had affected him for a couple years.

Mainieri is the eighth-winningest coach in Division I history. He has won 1,505 games in his career, including 533 at Notre Dame. He led the Fighting Irish to the 2002 College World Series and made eight straight regional appearances at the end of his tenure in South Bend. He coached premium talent at Notre Dame, including two of the five first-round picks in program history (Aaron Heilman and Brad Lidge).

Interesting. Maybe he feels like he can do it after a year off.

Would be quite surprised if he did that. But I do fully believe that he didn’t actually want to retire and the neck pain was just a good excuse. He knew he was sinking at LSU and wanted out before the pitchforks came out.

Maybe the PM lovers can become Norte dame fans, since they love PM above LSU

Well, look at what he left Jay Johnson to deal with at LSU. Maybe some of you haven’t noticed that Jay Johnson is upgrading LSU talent tremendously.

I personally don’t care what Pawl does. Adios.

Paul Mainieri about the Notre Dame job, which he confirmed to me he was contacted for:

“I don’t feel ready to get back in it yet and those reasons are still valid. I loved my time at ND, but I love living in BR. I needed a break and I’m happy being an LSU ambassador.”

Paul said he likes ND but he loves living in BR and being an LSU ambassador. He’s not going back right now.

Crazy to see Notre Dame head coaches leaving major sports for other jobs.

I don't know if he wants to coach again, but it wouldn't shock me if it happened. With no personal knowledge about his thoughts, whatsoever, it appeared to me, just by his body language, that he was tired of the pressure cooker that is the LSU baseball head coaching position. He was captain sunshine and smiles when he got here, and by the last few years he just looked miserable. I know some have said the passing of his dad might have played into it, and perhaps that was part of it, or maybe all of it. I just got the feeling that the honeymoon was kind of over, and the stress wore him out.

There's not going to be any of that at Notre Dame, so I guess maybe he'd consider it.

ND can have him so he can sell his home in UC as I'm looking to buy a house there.
