Yup. Early models had a rear stairwell/door.

D. B. Cooper used it to make his escape. Later models were modified because of Cooper, IIRC.

Not in passenger service. The last passenger flight on 727 was in 2019 in Iran.

Wasn't the fuselage basically the same width as a 757 and 737? 148 inches?

Looks like they took the 727 as a starting point, left the whole front of the plane alone, then moved the wings forward, then moved the tail mounted engines under the wings. Voila! A 737 that 727 pilots could fly without major re-training.

That might not be what they did, but it looks like it.

I was always partial to the L-1011 since it was the first plane I flew on and it was huge compared to the 727, which was the second plane I flew on as a kid.
