I knew very little about fly fishing until about 3 years ago. I had been on a few guided river trips for trout and salmon but that was it. Then I got the bug… since then, I have fished for reds here in Louisiana, and bonefish, tarpon, and permit in the Bahamas, Belize, and the Florida Keys. My biggest bone was about 6 lbs and I leadered a 85 lb tarpon. I don’t want to talk about Permit :-). I now own Orvis Helios 3D rods in 5, 8,9, and 11 wt. I even started tying my own flies. I find it very relaxing and I enjoy learning new things. I fully admit that I am VERY much a novice but look forward to learning as much as I can.

I will second St Croix as a solid rod that balances quality and price.

My main rod for here in Colorado is a 9ft, 5 wt Orvis Recon. All others (6.5ft 3wt, 11ft 5wt for euro, 6wt...) are all St. Croix.

One of my sons best friends caught his first permit this morning. He’s living in the Keys and trying to break into the guide business down there.
Sounds like you really got hooked. That’s great. My son is way of in it like you are.

I’ve posted this before, but for those with kids 15 and under, Dry Run Creek in Arkansas is a must. Youth and handicap only, catch and release, and artificial only. Public water with a great campground nearby.

I still don't know much, but since buying my cheap Orvis rig last spring, I've caught fish in MS, GA, NC, MT & hopefully checking off UT in a few months. It's a lot of fun. Planning on picking up a bigger setup for reds soon.

No such thing as wild fish.

Doesn't matter what the Native Fish Society group of figs say.

Stocked fish = stocker, but native species are sometimes stocked too.

Wild fish = offspring of stockers, or natives that were stocked

Natives = can be either of the above, depending on a number of factors, or can be a true native also, such as getting caught somewhere that no stocking truck can get to and has too many topo features for stocked fish to get up there from downstream. Natives can also be found swimming downstream among stockers as well.

Good thread

I love fly fishing. I have been doing some coastal fishing the past few year with some success

I’m looking at a Penn fly rodnreel set up. @$210 on Amazon.

I’m working on tying my own flies too but not real fluent on that yet

Always looking for good fly suggestions for red fish and specks

Going to breakout the 3wt this week one afternoon and head over to the Spring River and catch a few trout. Water Level has finally been falling enough to get some wading in.

I decided to pick up fly fishing this year after years of doing general rod and reel fishing. Ive been cutting my teeth learning on the Caney Fork river in Tennessee, I havent caught anything yet but I know this is due to me still learning about what types of flies to use and when to use them. I am starting to get a better grip on casting, question for fly fishers here though. Do you guys clamp down the barbs on the fly lures you use? I have heard about some fisherman doing this with lures they use for trout but as I said I am still new to this.

Check the local regs. Some areas are different.

If you're fishing the Pac NW you're using barbless hooks for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, and trout.
