I just spent the day testing out TFO’s new NXT Black Label reel. I was super impressed with the build quality and drag function. This is their latest budget friendly, cast aluminum, machined and ported reel. I paired it with the equally budget friendly Classic Trout 5wt rod from Redington.

Yep. There was a very large thread but it died due to lack of posts. Caught the hell out of the brim on the 5wt last weekend. Going to chase reds/jacks tomorrow before these storms roll in.

Caught my first brook trout a few weeks ago in a random stream in the blue ridge, and had a blast with it. Wasn’t at all hard to get the hang of casting, and I’m gonna put a hurting on the pond bream and cull bass.

It’s really not. I actually enjoy casting a fly rod much more than a baitcaster. Brookies are attacking dry flys with anger right now

My son and I are running over to the farm tomorrow to fish some and he is getting to meet someone that he isn’t expecting (rather famous former LSU football player).

I really like Orvis and TFO as far as budget combos go.
Orvis Encounter
This one from Orvis is awesome because it comes ready to go with backing and line for a really good price. All you need is flys to get on the water and catch fish.
You could go with what I was fishing today, the Reddington Classic Trout and the TFO Black Label. You would need to buy backer and line separately, but Scientific Anglers makes some super effective cheaper stuff that works like a charm. I would recommend buying specific to what you’re trying to catch.

I used an Orvis Encounter for a few years starting out. Good all around ready to roll budget rod. 9'-5wt is the standard rig for all around fishing. The higher the weight the beefier the rod. I catch everything from 6" cuthroat to 3 lb bass on a 9-5.
If you care to spend double, you can move up to the Orvis Clearwater Rig with their 25 year warranty. Many old rods have been replaced years after their purchase, its not a bad idea to get the warranty.
