Hanagriff mentioned 6 figure NIL deals for baseball players yesterday

On his podcast…
He didn’t claim anything is locked in for any particular player, but 2 things: Hanny is extremely plugged into the baseball program AND he worked in the NIL business for a little while.
His breakdown makes a lot of sense. To paraphrase, a 5th round pick is slotted for roughly $500K signing bonus. After taxes, agent fees, paying for your own food and housing, that $500K goes fast. He threw out the idea of a 3 year, $300K deal for a HS recruit and the potential to get some really talented kids on campus.
I’d suggest folks give it a listen.

I just don't see how the state can afford it. I don't think we have enough quality businesses that care about LSU football, basketball, and baseball.
I mean maybe they do, but how long before we start hearing about the disproportionate amount of money going towards mens sports versus women's sports.... This entire NIL scheme will come crashing down sooner rather than later

Would this be for the high draft picks considering signing, or all recruits?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the ones who probably don't make it to campus are signing 7 figure deals with their respective MLB team no?

I thought he still worked in the NIL business. What's he doing now? I wish he would come back to radio full-time.

He doesn’t work for the NIL brokerage company anymore? If not, why doesn’t he have a full time show yet?

Louisiana has a lot more individual wealth than most people realize. If it is truly a coalition then they don’t all need to have businesses. They can pay a Gordon McKernon or some other business to be the face of the NIL deals.

I listened to it last night. He's not wrong. It could influence SOME players that are on the fence. I still think a lot of players at the age of 18-21 think they aren't far from making it to the majors and upping that salary. So they would still be enticed to take the more money and a chance to get a head start on their pro career.

In theory it would apply to all recruits. Realistically, we won’t flip a first round pick that gets multiple millions of dollars.
But a HS kid drafted in the 5th round is still highly talented and coveted.

NIL definitely could be the difference in some of these guys signing in the 3rd-10th rounds vs. coming to college instead. Going to be tougher with the 1st/2nd rounder all getting 7 figure bonus deals, but NIL could certainly sway some of the 6 figure bonus guys.

At this point, there’s only 1 solution for the NIL mess- make the players employees.
Any attempt to regulate by conferences or the ncaa will be struck down in court, 100%. Just go ahead and make them employees of the university and treat them like anyone else who works on campus.

That would be legit. Nobody wants to rot in single A for a few years. It’s not fun, if you can get developed and still get similar money, coming to college is a no brainer. (If you can handle the school work)

Probably for guys that are taken within the top 7 rounds or so, but not in round 1 or 2. It also provides team with leverage for draft eligible players already on their roster.
Let's say a junior or, more likely, a draft eligible sophomore gets taken in the 4th round. He may be able to sign a $500k contract. Usually he would leave for that amount...even if he thought he maybe could improve his draft position with another year of college. But if he can now get a $300k NIL deal there is less risk for him to stay in school. Not all guys would choose to stay. But a 6 figure NIL deal for a player like that would give him something to think about.

LSU alumni have a fraction of the money of some schools. There will be a shift in power over time.

Hanny is the best we have on radio, or tv for that matter!

This is where I hope Marucci steps in with the high draft picks. The route to the MLB seems a little less winding if going through a power program than versus signing straight out of high school.

When there is a slot after a contract expires he will

I would love to sit down, have a beer, and talk baseball with Hanagriff and Hunt. Both of them are excellent in baseball knowledge, and Charles is very much in the know on LSU baseball.

Is he already out of that?
