Would you rank Top Gun: Maverick up there with T2 and Aliens?

In terms of greatest action sequels of all-time? Or do you think it falls just below that tier?

Yes.
a sequel that surpasses the original?
Yes

Tier below. But it was still great.

Alien and Terminator were sci-fi horror movies. T1 was damn near a slasher movie.
Aliens and T2 are sci-fi action movies.

Hmmm...
I'm one of those guys that like those originals more than the sequels, even though the sequels are classic themselves. That said, literally just got back from Maverick, and honestly...it's a better movie than Top Gun. It'll never hold the same place in my heart that the original holds, having seen it in the theater the summer I turned 16 and literally would have joined the Navy right on the spot if they could have guaranteed I'd be a "Naval Aviator," but overall it's just a more complete movie. Without a doubt the most fun I've had at the movies in a long LOOOOONG time.
BTW, remember how everyone keeps trying to claim that The Critical Drinker hates on everything? Yeah...
frick...YES!

I feel pretty comfortable saying Top Gun:Maverick is the best sequel ever made. That it came almost 40 years after the original makes it even more impressive.

Top Gun is my most hated movie of all time. I despise Tom Cruise and have no desire whatsoever to see the sequel... but, my wife wants to see it, so I told her I'd take her tomorrow. I plan to pretend that Tom Cruise is William Zabka every time his face is shown so that I can stomach the movie and give a fair critique.

All of this is irrational hatred and you are incapable of giving a fair critique.

Nothing "irrational" about it at all. I plan on seeing it and giving an unbiased assessment.

Just saw it and it was good. The flying was amazing.
But I felt it was lacking compared to the original as far as character development and writing. I also thought the first was more realistic to the military where this had more of a regular action movie feel as far as the plot.
Not as good as the first to me except for the flying parts which were much better visually.
Plus, no quotable lines like the first.

They had an actual mission in this movie whereas the first movie they just happened to encounter some MIGs.

They’re in there but going up against an iconic film like the original is a tall order.

Best sequel ever made? Sorry, no. Godfather II says hello

Better than the original, which was a classic
Arguably the greatest sequel of all-time

Hmmmm
I wouldn't go as far to put in that category but it is a better made movie than the first one. It's hard not to appreciate what the entire cast went through to film this. They made every dollar in the budget count and it shows.
It's an amazing movie.
No, or very little, CGI which I appreciate it.

Ok, so, we just got out. Here is my assessment.
The first half or so of the film I really didn’t care for that much, mainly due to all the flashbacks and nods to the original film, which as I said before, I didn’t care for at all. However, I thought the second half was EXCELLENT. Overall, very well-done.

Having full cooperation from the Navy is what made the original film, plus this one possible. If not, the movies would have been impossible to fund b/c of all the pilots they would have had to pay and aircraft they would have had to rent. With the USN on board, it was a spectacle, and a damn good one.

The jury is still out for me. The movie is fantastic but it’s so new that is hard to compare it to Aliens and T2.
Not really sure it’s a fair comparison though. Although Alien and T1 were great movies, it’s not like their sequels were trying to out do a movie of Top Gun’s caliper.
