I have only done them once before and they came out pretty good but always open to suggestions.
Covered them in cajun butter inside and out
sprinkled them with Tony's and s/p
minced an onion and garlic cloves and dropped them in the cans
Put a lil liquid crab boil in the beer
stuffed an onion in the neck hole
cooked over indirect coal for about 2 hours

You'd be better off using slap ya mamma
use a cheap beer.

Sounds good, but, don't forget, the cook has to be drinkin' pretty hard, too, for this dish to turn out right.
...and, you might skip the crab boil on one chicken just to see which one you like the best.

Wrapping things in bacon is never a bad idea.

I like to use the crab boil with lemon. Sounds good otherwise.

Use a can of Foster's if you're actually going to use a can as the base. It makes for sturdier cooking.

Thanks, but I used Miller Lite and I've got the 2 can holders to help keep it standing up.

question: i too plan on making drunk chicken, but for the first time.
is this possible on a pretty big propane grill?
tips on making the chicken stand up?
indirect heat for about 2 hours?
would a 24 oz beer work better than a 12oz?

Yes, if your cover is tall enough and you either don't have or can take out the baskets that usually come with those.

Indirect heat is the key. When I used to use a gas grill for mine, I would light one side put the chicken on the other and rotate the chicken every 30 minutes.

I don't have one of those stands, so I started using Foster's cans. The Foster's Bitters works pretty well and the circumference of the can gives the chicken a little wider base and thus more stability on a grill.

Helpful hint, put the can in a pie tin. All the fat/grease that comes off the bird will be captured in the tin and can then be thrown away (I pour the remaining beer out and then put the grease in the beer can and freeze it/put it in the trash on trashday) instead of it getting in the grill and making a mess.
