Matt McMahon has somehow squeezed an entire offseason’s worth of work into a little over one month as LSU’s new head coach. The Tigers first year leader of the men’s basketball program had to build this 13 man roster from scratch in very little time and at least on paper, has exceeded most’s expectations of what was thought to be possible.

This was a program that saw 11 of its players enter the transfer portal and with some form of impending punishment on the way from the NCAA, for McMahon to make this a place players and coaches want to come to speaks to the vision he has for this program moving forward.

While McMahon and this new regime of LSU basketball can’t control what could come with the NCAA investigation, the one area that is in the Tigers’ control is building a solid foundation for what this program’s future will look like. That first step was finding the right people, starting with the coaching staff and the players he wanted to be a part of this inaugural season.

“For us, the way we try to recruit is try to identify talented players. But then just to be very thorough, find the right fit, who’s gonna be all into the culture we’re building here,” McMahon said. “The sell is LSU, the SEC, player development, player investment. That’s the one thing that was really important to me in hiring our staff.”

McMahon wanted coaches who were well rounded and great at building relationships with not just the players but the players’ families as well. As LSU tries to establish a winning foundation in year one, having those strong relationships built over the next several months will only help in the transition on the court for practically a new roster.

“We’ll invest an unbelievable amount of time off the court to help those players maximize their opportunities here,” McMahon said. “With that player investment piece and the style of play we plan to incorporate is a fun way to play the game. It really allows talented players to showcase their skills within the framework of the team.”

I thought Wade's flip of the roster post JJ was impressive....but this trumped the hell out of that all things considered.

Great hire. I'm looking forward to the teams and culture he brings to LSU. Curious to see how year 1 plays out considering most people semi wrote it off considering the circumstances. Seems like a great time to be a tiger sports fan.

This summer will be very important for McMahon and his staff. Moreso OFF the court than on. He has to find a way to get a completely new team to gel. LSU has 6 transfers, 3 returning players, and 3 highly recruited freshman on the team. ALL, especially the transfers, are looking for significant minutes. You have to imagine the 3 Murray St. guys are close and feel like they have a leg up since they know the system. You have to think the 3 LSU guys are close since this is "their school and their team". The other 3 transfers didn't come to LSU to sit on the bench or get reduced PT relative to their prior schools. It's unlikely McMahon is going to have a 12 man rotation, so can he get all of these guys to buy in together as a TEAM even when some of the individual wants of the players can't be met? The basketball is the easy part. They can all play. Playing together will be the bigger challenge.

College basketball has changed where, essentially, coaches are having to mold drastically new teams each season because of the influx/outflux of players. Veteran players who transferred because they want something their prior school didn't offer (more PT, or a different role, or higher usage, etc) McMahon hasn't really had to do that yet because mid-major programs often develop guys over the course of multiple years. Then again, there were valid concerns about McMahon's ability to recruit at the major conf. level. He seemed to put those to rest very quickly.

I'm immune to fancy proclamations from new coaches.
I well remember the inspirational speeches given by Orgeron's new OC and DC prior to last season.
I was pumped.
Show me! Don't tell me how its going to be.

Coach Mac has done an absolutely incredible job. I do think the fanbase is ahead of itself a little with expectations with such a newly formed “mixed bag” roster. I have gone from being completely blindsided with Wade’s exit to very hopeful of the future of LSU basketball
