Any Boat Mechanic's lurking around the board...

I have Yamaha SX200TXRD which is the Salt Water Series OX66 Series II (fuel injected 2 stroke). Just cruising around this weekend it lost power and came off plane. I was able to idle 2 miles back to dock. No power to push itself on the trailer.

I have changed the fuel filter and plugs. No change. After a little trouble shooting I have found out that the 2, 4 and 6 cylinders are not getting any fire. I understand their are coils for each cylinder but it is strange all 3 would fail at the same time.

Most boat mechanics are 3-6 weeks out.

Any help would be appreciated.

I think I remember reading that Yamahas only idle on 3 cylinders.

Sounds like your VFT filter is clogged up.

Sounds like the power pack. I had a similar issue on my old boat.

Where do you live and what year in the engine? I have a YDIS if you motor is compatible could help diagnose. I can help if you’re close to BR.

I had a cam shaft sensor go out on my F250 and that little laptop paid for itself.

All 3 coils probably didn't go bad at one time.

Not to say it can't happen.

You most likely lost a switchbox (powerpack) to that side of your motor.

You have 2 switchboxes one for the 1,3,5 side and one for the 2,4,6 side.

I just changed these on my motor because of the same issue.

I can help you diagnose the problem.

Its pretty easy to do.

If it is a bad switchbox I recommend changing both of them at the same time.

It's an easy job to do yourself and save some money in the process.

Can you point me in a direction so I can test it.

What would be the official name of this switchbox?

I have checked the spark with the motor in gear and out of gear. Same result, no spark on 2,4 & 6.

I live up by New Roads.

I originally thought it might be the cam shaft sensor, but a mechanic told me he has never seen one go out. That still could be an option but It seems unlikely that the spark would be out only on 2,4 & 6.

They have a shift interrupt that kills 3 cyls. Check the shift switch and the shift linkage for proper adjustment.

Give me holler I can walk you through it on the phone....its easy to do.

Switchbox is the correct terminology. Some people call it a powerpack basically same thing. I guess it depends on who you are talking with.

Sounds like one side of the Stator has taken a dump, perhaps a Power Pack. 99.9% of my engine knowledge is on Mercury through the years, but if Yamaha is designed the same, the two I mentioned are the likely culprits.

Also, if you're in Louisiana, you need to sign up at
Sreeam & Fly. About 75% of folks on that board are Louisiana boat hot rodders and there are some phenomenal mechanics on that board.

Plus one screamandfly.com

A lot of good information on that site. I have met good people on there.

Met the man that built my motor from that site.

Update!

First off thanks to Bourbon and redlos for a few pointers which eliminated a few things.

After trying to get a shop to look at my motor with not much luck, I decided to eliminate problems. I Finally narrowed it down to probably a crankshaft position sensor or CDI unit. Leaning towards a cdi issue I purchased one from a guy in ocean springs on ebay for $300. 2 days later I received it and installed it. Boom. Went run and everything is fine!

Thanks again to everyone!
