So every once in a while I see a news article from NASA claiming that warp speed may happen some day.

So do any of you think this will ever happen before we’re extinct?

We’d do better folding space and plane hopping.

I doubt you've ever read an actual NASA article claiming that warp speed may happen.

I believe any attempt to do that will result in lots of fiery destruction.

But, and this is important, not even the debris ejected from the violent explosions will approach anything like “warp speed”.

I’d hate to be a tester

No. But, I can almost imagine (it helps to be drunk/high) a time when science can make an exact replica of every one of the 7,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 atoms in your body and store them in various places in the universe and then you could like....subliminally choose one of these "selfs" to inhabit or even be in two or more places at once or....GOTDAMMIT, who do you have to blow around here to get another tanqueray and tonic??

It’s actually very simple. All we need is a gravity drive that creates an artificial black hole to open a portal from one part of the universe to another

Getting to warp speed is one part of the problem. Slowing down will be an equal bitch.

The only way they get there is by doubling down on their Diversity, Inclusion and Equity initiatives, nothing else matters.

The theoretical math is there. Watched something today on what's called white holes. Think they said something along the lines about harnessing anti-matter. I mean pure theory but the idea is that the anti-matter would shield you against the gravitational force of a black hole.

We know that spacetime can be manipulated. Mass does it all the time. We also know that spacetime is independent from the speed-of-light limitation.

Theoretically, if we could compress spacetime behind an object and expand spacetime in front of the object, it would easily achieve warp speed, which is some factor faster than light speed.

Of course, first we have to figure out just what spacetime is.

Nope.

Its basically warping time/space. We are so far away from being able to do that on that scale.

I thought we achieved this with the covid vaccine rollout.

But even if it did, how useful would it be? Sure we could get a great distance in a short time relative to the traveler, but (if I understand correctly) time on earth would pass at a different rate relative to the solar system. So essentially you could go on a warp flight around the cosmos, but when you got home hundreds or thousands of years would have passed on earth and everyone you knew would be long dead.
