My house backs up to woods and my wife texted me while I was at work yesterday with a picture of what had to be a 3 foot...somekinda snake on our patio. Scared the shite out of her especialy since we have a little one due in July and we spend a lot of time out there.
I sprinkled some snake away across the tree line, but would like a better/more permanent solution. I could see me having to reapply this alot, it smells awful and is almost $15 per bag.
Has anyone had any good experiences with those ultra sonic stakes you put in the group? If so what brand? They seem to be marketed more for moles, but mention snakes.
TIA

A rat terrier. Preferably a few of them.

You live in the woods, you will see wildlife. Deal with it.
Nothing is going to keep all snakes away, just keep their food source down and you can minimize snake encounters.

Aware...but would like to do my best to reduce them at least

Second this...we also live next to woods and water and the snakes are out. The wives yorkie is absolute killing machine with snakes. Zero fear which may be his undoing actually.

Every "snake repellent" product is a complete waste of money.

I looked into it a while back. Apparently there's nothing you can do that works.

Might i recommend the Taurus “judge”.

i've had a rattlesnake laugh at a .22lr shot. don't get me wrong. he died eventually, but it just pissed him off on the first shot.
i'd say a .410 would be the better bet.
ETA: i'm assuming woods backing up to the house means that neighbors would understand/expect/not hear a .410 round going off? obviously don't do that in an urban environment.
in the past, i would have said a cat, but a 5 foot king snake killed my neighbors cat in our yard a few years back. i was scared it was my dogs, but there wasn't a mark on that cat other than you could tell something had compressed it around the neck. that was an awesome conversation with my lonely 80 yo widow neighbor.

Unfortunately I back up to woods because I live in the very bsck of a subdivision that backs up to woods. A subdivision with a very nosey HOA facebook group lol

Keep your grass cut and tidy up any beds to eliminate cover where possible

I do the moth balls around the perimeter. I've only seen one snake in several years. But I'm not out looking for them either.

How often do you have to put more mothballs out?

Another terrier vote here - I've seen what Jack Russells do to snakes. Backup option is an outdoor cat, they're going to kill everything that a snake would eat and slowly drive them out.
Watch out for what's going to attract mice - trash cans, compost piles, pet food bowls - this made a huge difference for me.
Last resort you can fence off with hardware cloth - not mesh - LINK

Every few months maybe. You can toss them around and see them sitting there. Rain will eventually dissolve them.
The strong naphthalene smell should keep snakes away.

We also have a neighborhood feral cat, named Sammy. He may be the one keeping the snakes at bay.
