Full Metal Jacket was the most realistic boot camp according to him.
Dang. Didn’t realize there were that many murder-suicides in boot camp. Figured we would hear more of that

quote:I know you’re probably joking, but obviously the effect boot camp had on that particular individual is not common. However, the mental effect it has on some can be extreme. Usually they’re weeded out before it gets too bad. That probably wasn’t the case as much back in the day.

But the aspect of how they break you. Everything you knew is no longer important. Everything you believed in. They train you to work as one unit. One mind. At least in the infantry.

I’m a a former combat engineer who scoured the Iraqi dirt, dead cows, trash, and once even a dead women’s body for IEDs.
It wasn’t completely realistic and parts were crazy far fetched, but it nailed some aspects of the characters.

Basic Training: there was a recruit who wrapped the buffer cord around his neck and jumped out the second floor window and hung himself
AIT: same story
NCO Academy: same story
OCS School: same story

Yeah that’s stuff you don’t hear about.
Ive heard things that I really don’t want to know honestly. Especially out in the field.
I didn’t hear anything crazy about my brothers basic training. There were a lot of guys who lost it, but they were just sent home. It’s the mental aspect Full Metal Jacket shows that I’ve been told by multiple people is accurate.
Out in the field however, I’ve heard fricking nightmares. I don’t doubt it happens in basic training as well.

The only reason I can’t say Black Panther is the most ridiculous best picture nomination ever is because Avatar was nominated before that.
Black Panther was the 4th best Marvel movie that year after Infinity War, Deadpool 2, and Spider-Man into the spider verse. It had zero business being in the best picture category.
