This is correct. I’m a former ROTC instructor and Academy liaison officer. There are a number of reasons a cadet, both ROTC and AF Academy, could defer service (or may not ever serve), especially in years where commissioning sources overproduce. I don’t know this cadets situation, but it is not unheard of. My guess is he will be allowed to serve in the AF Reserve or his commission will be deferred until there is more clarity regarding his professional football aspirations. Regardless, this young man deserves all our support for what he has done and what he will do, whenever that may occur.

Trump signed an EO to allow academy guys to play pro sports if drafted. They have obligations like doing literature and speaking engagements.
