Will be a good practice squad back up player
Posted on 4/30/22 at 3:27 pm to GTP8445
why is he an automatic practice squad player, even before the first practice?
Posted on 4/30/22 at 3:30 pm to GTP8445
Does he have to serve his commitment first?

Gotta believe he can be a rotational piece. We consistently pick UDFA players that rotate in
Posted on 4/30/22 at 3:32 pm to Sleepy_Tiger
because he went to Air Force and not Southern Miss

To be fair they picked him in the 6th round, generally not much more than that is expected

Back in the day all military academy grads had to serve out their commitment, usually four years active duty; ask Roger Staubach. Today they seem to be able to get out of it for various reasons.

I think if he makes the team than he’s good to play .. if. It the he instantly goes back to serve those 4 years

If he can be the 3rd or 4th DT and play good special teams I think everyone would call that a win.

I think the armed forces has kind of gone the BYU route and let these guys just serve the rest of their commitment at their convenience

Good looking frame and athleticism plus versatility. Will be interesting to see what Nielsen can do with him.

Taxpayer paid education, then duck your service commitment ? Sounds about right for this day and age.

Only way to recruit competitively.

This is correct. I’m a former ROTC instructor and Academy liaison officer. There are a number of reasons a cadet, both ROTC and AF Academy, could defer service (or may not ever serve), especially in years where commissioning sources overproduce. I don’t know this cadets situation, but it is not unheard of. My guess is he will be allowed to serve in the AF Reserve or his commission will be deferred until there is more clarity regarding his professional football aspirations. Regardless, this young man deserves all our support for what he has done and what he will do, whenever that may occur.

Trump signed an EO to allow academy guys to play pro sports if drafted. They have obligations like doing literature and speaking engagements.

I’m curious if you are drafted in the NFL if you couldn’t fall under an early honorable discharge, under “unique circumstances.” I remember hearing and reading about winning the lottery, while enlisted, and being able to bounce (if granted), due to having a certain amount of money. Not sure if this applies to the Academy, I sure dreamed about while out to sea for months.

He's not ducking, just deferring. What's the issue?

OK, I'll bite. Will probably get flamed, but here goes.
Why is honoring your commitment a bad thing? I am assuming the guy knew what his commitment was when he got the scholarship and he took it anyway. Now, because he can make some big bucks, that invalidates the promise he made to pay back for his education?.
