Maybe a dumb question, but Google didn’t give me a straight answer… Are these grafted?

My plants have some very vigorous growth from suckers. The leaves look different and they have no blooms. No thorns either, though. I’m wondering if I need to prune this growth away, as I would on grafted fruit trees.

No - not grafted. My Ark Freedom have bloomed and have unripe berries on them now but they are three years old. You would prune as you would any blackberry to promote more branching.

Definitely not suckers. I have a couple Freedoms. They are huge producers here in Baton Rouge.

Check out this link that describes the primocanes you are seeing. LINK

Some primocanes will produce in a secondary crop later in the year (July-Oct), but our weather this far south isn’t that conducive for that crop. Those primocanes will develop floricanes that will absolutely be producers next year. So I would advise to only lightly trim.

Fat fingered that downvote, friend. Sorry.

I messed up and did not prune last year. This is the first year they’re making any fruit. This new growth sure makes them look healthier. Deer were a real problem last year.

I’ve got a chain link fence line at the end of our property that I want to plant a thornless blackberry variety that will also grow along the fence line. Baton Rouge area. Anyone have some ideas?

Arapaho, Apache, Natchez, Ouachita, and the Ark Prime Freedom are all erect thornless blackberry cultivars that seem to grow well in our region. I have 3 of each all planted 3 or 4 years ago. In my limited experience I’ve been most impressed by the Arapaho and Ark Prime Freedom. A lot of info on each cultivar on the University of Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station - the developer of all these varieties. Look at the short videos of each variety by Dr John Clark, developer of these cultivars.

Weird, I just so happen to pick a Prime Ark Freedom yesterday afternoon. I got it to go in the chicken run hoping it will grow out and give them some shade/cover.

I wish I knew what my other blackberry bush is. I got it years ago at Lowe's and have no clue.

Just pinch the very tip of the prime ark freedom to “prune”. That will promote lateral branching. I picked my first ripe blackberry two weeks ago. I have been unsuccessful with a fall crop on the prime ark freedoms for 3 years now. It’s just too hot in south Louisiana I think for a primocane crop.

The so called suckers are primocanes. Next year they will be flurocanes. Flurocanes will bloom and produce berries. The 1st year (primocanes) will produce berries later in the year. I live on a lake in Columbia La about hour and a half north Alexandria my neighbor's plants and mine always produce berries in the fall off of first year canes.

I also cut deadwood out (3rd year canes will die and turn brown cut them low to the ground with pruning shears). We also propagate with the lateral canes. Youtube video texas prepper watch the videos. You can cut laterals off and replant them and they will take root and create more blackberry bushes

Have you tried Cleggs on Seigen in BR they’ve had some in past, don’t know if they have any in stock today but you can call.

What's a good bush variety that won't get too big?
