Why doesn't the SEC support soccer? And don't tell me soccer isn't a sport. Anyone who says that has never played.

The schools literally don’t even consider it as a spot. It’s a club sport just like pick up basketball.

SEC is smart. Soccer is a cure for insomnia.

Title IX.

Also, men's college soccer is more of a last chance developmental program for youth players who want to go pro, as opposed to the constructs of every other sport in America where you have to go to college to be pro.

You wouldn't be able to last 10 minutes trying to play soccer. You have to have incredible endurance. Way more than football.

What does sex based discrimination have to do with not supporting soccer?

Title IX means you have to have equal scholarships for men and women.

Well with football eating up 85 scholarships for men and there not being an equivalent women's sport in terms of scholarship numbers, a lot of men's sports get dissolved because of it.

To his point, which is why we have a womens soccer team and not a mens team.

Overall, soccer has a lot of athletes across divisions in college. Second highest total athletes only behind football. I think they get plenty of attention but it's not popular in the south. All of the talent and interest is from West/East coast.

I assume you are talking mens soccer specifically? There are 15 SEC women's teams and only 2 men's teams (play in Conference USA). They don't make money and attendance is low. Believe me, if people were beating down the door to attend games, they would get more attention.

Here is a great stat from google about a game in 2014 between the mens programs of Kentucky & South Carolina: In October, the Gamecocks and Wildcats played to a scoreless tie in Lexington, before a listed crowd of 396. When they met in football eight days earlier, the crowd numbered more than 82,000

Thank you for your informative reply. I do wonder how some conferences do support men's soccer though. I do not believe it is a regional thing. Soccer is becoming more and more popular. Texas has two professional teams and is looking to host the next world cup. The youth program is also exploding. Also, attendance can't be an issue because I am sure there are plenty of sponsored sports that get little to no attendance.

Why not hockey? Why not lacrosse?

Becoming more popular? Yes. Not enough to merit the support at this point.

Most D1 schools have maxed out the # of men's sports because of the Title 9 balance between Mens/Womans. The only way that soccer gets added is if 1) it's popular enough to push another men's sport out or 2) more women's sports get added and another men's sport can be afforded.

I do believe interest is a regional thing so we can agree to disagree there.

Louisiana has produced two Hermann Award winners (soccer equivalent of the Heisman) that I know of.

That award has been around since 1967. 2 times in 54 years is like 3%.

For all you soccer nuts out there, these matchups are called the SEC Derby every year because they are in fact the only two SEC teams. Kinda hilarious little nugget of info if you ask me.

They also call it the SEC Championship for the same reason. lol

My daughter is interested in playing college soccer. I've had to educate myself a lot about the woman's side of the sport. I can tell you that the best players come from the coasts.

At these national tournaments, the south generally does not have a good showing (some Texas teams excluded).

Football and Baseball are king down here. College soccer will never be a great product bc all of the best players either go to the MLS when they are 16-17 or go to Europe.
