Are basketball venues called stadiums? I always thought they were called arenas or something like that.

The blender is over 20 years old and was built on the cheap. It wasn't good even when it was new.

assembly centers. whatever. it is mind boggling to think that would even be considered.

One of my baws sent me an article about that from nola.com but it’s behind a pay wall. Not really sure how in-depth that is going. Want to give us the down low?

it was built to lure an NBA team out here after the Wolves acquisition by Top Rank fell through. It did its job.

i had to look at my app on my phone--for whatever reasons there are no paywalls there.

Gayle and Lauscha were very vague. 2 years left on the baby dome lease, but they have a 5 year option they can exercise now. but Lauscha assures us they are not trying to use this as leverage against the State.

holding out for some upgrades, mmmmk. arena is used for other things that benefits the state. new arena though should be built by the team

There are two realistic locations that a new arena could be built. One is on the river and the other would be within the existing footprint of the land that currently is owned by Benson/LSED. While the river location would be an ideal spot, it would take nearly 5-7 years to build the adequate infrastructure needed to take on traffic near the convention center. Would the state pay for this plus the half a billion they would likely be shelling out for a new arena?

A larger venue could bring in bigger events that benefit the state. Benson is going to have to come out of pocket on the new arena, but she’s going to ask the state to pick up half the tab.

shhheyat, state cant even commit to a new bridge in baton rouge even though that is sorely needed. the GNO delegation in BR does not have the same pull it had 25 years ago and Edwin edwards aint walking thru that door--in this life anyway.

The next governor will be some hick like Rispone or something.

Top Rank...i forgot about them. Fred Hofheinz wine-ing and dining all those legislators. good times!

of course i guess they could use the baby dome as a shelter of last resort for when the next big one hits.

The other thing I got out of the article is that they'll keep milking the state for renovation funds while also seeking a new venue. Either the arena is at the end of its life and renovation funds should stop so money can instead be diverted to a new venue, or the arena can be fine with renovations and the new venue talk should be stopped and the Pels should sign a long term lease with a renovation commitment. Straddling the middle is a complete waste of money.

Is the Blender better than any existing arenas?

I think the only ones that may be in the bottom tier with us are Washington OKC Utah Minny and Portland.

Chicago is old but still has tons of suites so I'm assuming that's still a cut above (and MSG is kind of exempt).

The venue needs to be big enough to host some regional finals in March Madness. There really isn’t much that can be done within the existing footprint and it wouldn’t be conducive to spend anymore money on it.

From what I’ve heard there are a lot of wheels in motion on this.

One of the potential sites is on tchoup right across from where the billion dollar river front development is taking place.
