in Metry area. need rear child seats on both of them. Should I go to academy and just pick something up or splurge and go to an actual bike store?

Bike store, but unless inventory has caught up there’s nothing there. After looking in vain for an entry level Trek We ended up ordering from bikesdirect. If you ignore the “this is an $800 bike we sell for $400” stuff their information is up front and honest, and you can see all the major components listed and decide how much you want to spend. And while they do exaggerate the savings there’s no doubt you’ll spend more for an identical bike if it’s got a recognizable name.

If you know how to service them, go used. We all have nice bikes for half new prices. People getting rid of bikes need them out of the way, and people buy bikes nicer than they need all the time. You just need to know if it is in good shape.

I have a sixthreezero and it's an epic pile of shite. Got it in 2017 or 18. Ordered it with fenders, still don't have them. Have replaced both tires, both rims, pedals, and brakes. Bike has been stored under my carport out of the weather it's entire life. In the same time frame and stored right next to mine, my wife's Public Bike and my sons Woom have held up perfectly.

Academy will be fine for just cruising. I have Specialized from a bike store, if you are going to be just mulling around go to a box store. Now, if you just dont want to fool with some maint issues, go to your local bike store. We overpaid for what we use them for, but it sure is nice to drop it off to get minor things fixed for damn near nothing.

Also, dont get a mountain bike, get something more set up for cruising or a hybrid. They are just much more comfortable.

Comfort is key. Look for a used Electra Townie or cruiser. Their Pedal Forward technology is legit; so comfortable to ride. If you find one under $400, buy it.

Bike store and get a trailer for the kids. Trailers a lot safer than seats.

If you take a spills do the the kids. Get the right trailer and even if you tumble the kids do not. Yes they are more expensive but lots safer.
