Buying property in the East

quote:

=Marvel's newest 'Captain America' and New Orleans native Anthony Mackie has reportedly purchased 20 acres of land in New Orleans East with the intention of building a new film studio, sources tell The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate.

Sounds like a terrific investment.

It’s actually brilliant. He won’t even have to hire actors to film live action fights with bad guys.

LOL if you think he is building it with his money and that it won't be heavily subsidized.

Just like the one Tyler Perry built in GA, this will be largely paid for by tax subsidies.

ETA: I get you are saying its a bad location, but that is exactly why it will get Government money galore. That and the owner being a minority.

People work in poorer areas all the time. They don't shop or live there. He will be just fine.

There are plenty of studios in the hood in ATL, and they do really well.

Personal friends with him. He is wanting to develop a similar setup to what Sidney has built with The Ranch. Given Anthony's success and contract with Disney/Marvel, this is a huge deal for him and Nola. He could leverage his own studio/stages for filming vs going to Atlanta (where Marvel shoots most majority of their set scenes).

Given that he and his family are all very success individually, its kind of nice to see someone from here reinvesting in their own community.

Without getting into the tax benefits and subsidies, at least someone is trying to do something positive in the east.

Yes, subsidies plus land is cheaper in the hood. He lives in Nola so the east makes sense if he needs 20 acres.

There's so many film productions going on in NOLA that they'll have no problem with the location

Starlight Studios for example is already in the East

I think it's pretty cool of him to do this and smart. If we as a state are going to subsidize film (which I think is stupid), then at least give us something more permanent like studios vs the carpet baggers that only come in, rape the subsidies, then leave.

It's across the street

The east needs any development it can get. Good for Anthony for re investing in his home.

Glad to see he’s bullish on the program being extended. He was one of many developers looking at that site for a studio.

I wish he would build another ice skating ring in the East like they had at The Plaza at Lake Forest.

I agree with you on this but the impact that this credit has had on the ancillary support businesses (that don't get the tax credit) has probably been a wash after the income tax. The difference between getting a $50+m production to come to town could be boiled down to a credit like this that saves the production $500k-1m vs another state.

The tax credit was the last decision maker for the last two productions to decide on BR/Celtic vs ATL/ABQ. The carpetbaggers that come in from out of state and bring their infrastructure with them vs leasing/renting from local places are the worst and shouldn't qualify for those credits.
