re: Survivor 42... Premiere 3/9

I don’t know, that was a pretty tough challenge in those conditions. That one guy’s size was a huge advantage. He barely had to swim and fight that current because of his height and his body mass wasn’t as impacted by the string current. He’s also from the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach are so very comfortable in the water.
I think several past seasons would have struggled with that challenge.
Crazy tribal council, and I liked how Daniel threw that girl who thought she was in total control under the bus. They made it look like Hai saw her whisper Lilian to him.

I actually couldn't believe he was so bad at negotiating. He gave up his leverage immediately by saying he wanted to avoid drawing rocks by any means necessary. The only way it makes sense would be if he decided to flip on his alliance as soon as the votes were read.

Yeah, and that was right after saying he wasn’t going to win this season because of his neuroticism. He’s probably my favorite player this season so far because he’s so spastic. I was dying laughing when he lost Mike’s immunity necklace.

Another note from last night. I couldn't help but laugh when Chenelle and Omar thought they had a good strategy leaving the top of the island. "Yeah, if there's an option to stay safe and get an advantage, let's do that." Sure, Survivor is going to go through all of this trouble to give you a penalty free reward.
I actually think that when there are only 2 people on the island, it only makes sense to take the risk. If you end up losing your vote, it's because the other person took the risk as well. So, you're really not fricking over anybody. They can't get mad at you for risking while they did the same thing. So, yeah, there is a risk in losing your vote, but the social risk is not there. If the other person plays it safe, they will have no idea if you risked it or not.

Daniel was in a lose/lose situation, because Hai clearly was suspicious (rightfully so) and he couldn't afford to lose Lydia once he knew Daniel had flopped. Hai was willing to go to rocks for a 75% chance to send someone outside his alliance home. Daniel was willing to send Jenny home rather than take a 25% chance on it being him.
He went about it very poorly though trying to put it all on Chantelle. If he just explains it and plays it right, he probably keeps Mike and Chantelle's trust.
Now if Chantelle had just played it safe with her vote like she said to Omar it would have been 3-2 Lydia, but she took the risk.

frick no.
There are only a handful of past cast members that could do what Johnathan did. Without him, I doubt any tribe would have finished last night and I think more past tribes would have failed than would have succeded. Ozzy, Jaison and Yul would have been fine but I don't think they had Jonathon's height so not sure if they could have helped others as much. Elizabeth (the Olympic swimmer) would have slayed individually but not so useful for others.
Jonathan was just the perfect person for the challenge, good in the water, tall and strong.

I agree, but collectively tribes were much stronger, even if Johnathan is a standout.
ETA: And it helped that the strongest woman is on the same tribe.

Would they have had to cancel that challenge in past seasons?

Daniel needs a tribe shakeup in a hurry.

That shocked me and Jonathan has a huge target on his back now

He already did. He's going to get picked off after the merge as soon as he's vulnerable.

Kind of a dull episode... but it is impressive how bigly the orange tribe has been dominating lately.
Swati just needed to not rock the boat and it would have been an easy vote out for Tori, but she just kept scheming and lying. Too early for all that when you aren't the target.

The rope challenge design should have handicapped orange because bigger players like Thor should have had a harder time dancing around 2 other players to untangle the ropes and it would be tougher to crawl under obstacles too. Add a puzzle to the end and orange had no business running away with it.
If there’s no tribal mixup before merge, I think Thor will go further than most of us expect.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Size was definitely not an advantage and wasn't much of one in the second elimination since he didn't do the key jump. Dude can clearly swim circles around everyone else though.
If his tribe stays strong and merges with their 4 plus the extra vote he can get pretty far.

This Johnathan guy is staking his claim as the greatest competitor in Survivor history
He’s on another level with this size/athleticism/hand-eye coordination/stamina

Let's see how he does when it comes to individual challenges before crowning him... but yeah he's been impressive.

He’s going to be even more impressive
He’s doing individual challenges right now, while dragging 3 other people around in a boat

Most big people really struggle when it comes to some of the individual challenges that favor the smaller people; balance, holding arms out/up, etc.
But this dude is a pull-up champion, he will have more stamina than the normal big guy. He will be voted out on the first post merge challenge he loses. He needs to find an idol, fast.
My ponies for the year are Daniel and Tori.
