A great All American tiger passed away yesterday. He played in 4 Super Bowls with the Vikings.

Had the same pleasure. By accident. My friend with me was a huge Vikings fan and could not believe he got to meet the great Moonie Winston.

He was very gracious with his time. Talked about Billy Cannon at Istrouma. I didn’t realize how good he was at baseball until some years later.

Roy (Mooney) Winston! I played baseball and football with him at Istrouma HS back in the good ole days! He was a great guy and even greater athlete! I still remember when he hit a homerun so far from home plate at the diamond at Istrouma that it cleared the left field fence, the parking lot and landed on the roof of the second story of the school. I have no idea how long it was, but I have never seen a baseball hit that far!!!!

RIP Mooney!!!

He has to be regarded as one of the best players in LSU history; that 1961 team was loaded with great players. Hopefully, Winston gets into the Hall of Fame; he played for 15 years for the Vikings and went to 4 Super Bowls.

Someone can clarify but didn't he play OG at LSU and LB in the NFL?

That sounds kinda odd for today but I think that's the case.

Played both at LSU. A lot of those boys went both ways.

Labeled by many as the most vicious hit in the NFL ever was his tackle of Larry Csonka.

Some Youtube highlights of Winston:

He also played on the baseball team.

Like someone mentioned, he played OG and LB for the Tigers.

RIP Moonie

Grew up in South Florida in the early 70s and Larry Csonka was my hero. Roy Winston's shot on Csonka damned near killed him in 1972.

Moonie was my second cousin once removed. I was a Vikings fan as far back as I can remember..

He gave me this signed picture (so old it's B/W).

RIP to one of the Tiger and Purple People Eater legends..

I see you graduated from Istrouma in 1963. I think my Uncle was coaching there then. You may have known him as well.
