Dementia: Disabling Firearms

How difficult would it be to disable firearms without an elderly person knowing?
Are there parts on most guns that removal would cause the gun to 100% not fire? Do pistols have removable firing pins like a rifle?
Tia.

How many weapons are we talking about here? If it is just a few list what they are and maybe get some suggestions.

Each gun will be different. There is no one size fits all answer.

Dementia or not, tampering with someone's firearms is a recipe for disaster.

Trade out the ammo with blanks

Need to know which type of firearm you're talking about?

Just throw some locks on them or take them. If you are at this point then who cares if the ill person gets upset about it. It’s a fricking gun, not a pack of cigarettes

The old man was with a Sheriff's Office for decades, so think about the early stages of Dirty Harry's mind slipping.
I'd say mainly older revolvers, but I could get a list.
The sweet old guy recently made a comment about "going back to ________." His wife asked him why he needed to go there, and he mentioned being too much of a burden. His family's graveyard is located where he mentioned.
It is pretty fricking sad.

Take out the firing pins and such.

No firing pin. You'd have to disassemble the hammer, but he'd quickly figure out its gone. Might as well lock up all his guns.

That sounds like the only option.
We might have to stage a break in or something, bc this old man loves his guns.

Uh yea. You’d be surprised how precise you have to be to get all these parts to work.

Do you think a person with dementia is capable of determining who is an actual intruder and not a friend or relative? I have had experience with a family member with dementia, they should not have access to firearms.

I’m going through this too. He thought a speaker falling from a shelf was a sniper shot. He was literally army crawling in his house to avoid being shot. I took all of his guns and he hasn’t even noticed. Prayers to you.

The likelihood of an elderly man committing suicide with a firearm is 1000x more likely than him being killed by a home intruder.
For the OP, consider the consequences of if he tries to kill himself with a non-working firearm. It would probably be better to have them removed from the home.

Remove ammo, replace with blanks if you want, and put locks on trigger mechanisms.
