It depends on the artist. Some are just kick arse live, some I rather listen to their studio versions.

My all time favorite live album is "Songs in the Attic" by Billy Joel. That album contains perfect live recordings which out perform its original studio versions by a mile and more.

Just listened to my first entire Grateful Dead Concert, was Philadelphia 89, was awesome.

Are you saying that was the first Dead show you attended? Or was it your first time listening to an entire Dead show all the way through?

If the latter...whoa! Are you in for a ride. Listening to whole shows is the way to go if you have the time. Or even if it takes multiple sittings or drives to get through them. There’s a flow to how they constructed their shows that take you out there and bring you back. And there are distinctive qualities to their different eras.

The first show I attended was Pittsburgh 7/6/87 with surprise special guests the Neville brothers (some of them, anyway). Check it out sometime:

The latter, I had never listened to a Dead show before.

+1 on live, in general. If a band has talent and proficiency at their craft, that's the way. The energy is on another level. I like music that sounds like people actually playing instruments. Production matters - especially the last couple of decades, many/most studio albums have been over-produced in some ways that rob music of its spirit.

The plus for studio is it allows musicians & producers to craft things with techniques that are hard to do in real time, and may require pre-recorded material in live performance.

Sure, as long as it's a good quality recording. A lot of times the energy is much better live. For instance I much prefer Tommy on the extended Live at Leeds to Tommy the album. But it holds for a LOT of artists.

I love live music

I listen to atleast a few songs from one of these almost every single day:

How the West was Won
RHCP at Slane Castle and Hyde Park
Gilmour at Gdansk
GVF at Red Rocks
Live Aid 1985
Plenty of Widespread
Warren Haynes presents The Benefit

As great as the studio version of Skynyrd's "Gimme Three Steps" is the One More From The Road cut kicks it's arse.

I really prefer live music over studio for the most part.

This has been my favorite live performance for the last 40 years...

Live music is much better than studio. I like how unpredictable it is.

That is why I prefer jam bands. I like how they improvise and you will hardly hear a song played the same way twice.

It gets repetitive listening to the same recording of a song over and over again. Live music brings something new to it.

It depends on the artist. For most bands I listen to live shows more often.
