Was the monthly child tax credit really an advance?

I know guys who got it that claim they’re still getting 12-15k back in refunds.
I’m not so sure it really was an advance. I haven’t heard anyone bitching about getting little to no refund. I had 5 guys didn’t show up to work today cause they got thousands in refunds and they all have numerous kids they get the tax credit for

I don't have any kids so it hasn't done shite for me.

It all depends on how much you make

I wouldn't know, I have young kids and the only privilege I get is to write a check to the Fed.

Sounds like you have some tax cheats on your payroll

This. And anyone getting 12-15k back is typically one of two categories: making bank while exercising some nice tax adverse options, or massively overpaying throughout the year.

Without knowing how they had their W4 setup it's impossible to know really. I actually know a guy that used to have extra taken out of his check just so he would get a big refund. Guess he didn't trust himself not to spend it

Didn't make a difference for me, 3 kids and tbh it was a pretty helpful way to pay that credit out

Or not making much money at all and qualifying for every credit

Guy I know said he's getting hit hard on his taxes for it. Not sure of their bracket or financial situation.

They're not getting anything "back" it's a handout

It was an advance.
My gf has two kids. She got 1500 last year on the advance. Her refund is 1500 less. But the credit is insane. She is getting 9k back still. It would have been 10.5.

It was an advance if taken as monthly payouts over the second half of 2021.
The catch is that this was made available because the actual child tax credit basically doubled. So if you took the advance payments, and claimed your standard credit when filing your 2021 taxes, your refund may be largely the same as it was a year ago.
However if you didn’t take the advance payments, your refund will be higher by that total amount. Or, if you took the payments, and didn’t claim you took the payments when filing, you’re double dipping which can get you in a bit of trouble if caught.

I have to pay back every last dime they deposited....plus another $3k

12-15k back?
That is called a tax cheat.
Even with every credit in the world you'd have to make almost no money and have about 8 kids to get anywhere near that...legally.
That's an absurd refund amount and likely not true.

They’re black guys making minimum wage with like 8 kids

What sort of dumpster fire business do you run that pays minimum wage? You can make more than that in fast food.

My ex gets to claim both kids, I do wish however there was some kind of credit for us guys who pay child support on time, every month year after year.
