There's a lower limit to how small they can be. To make it explode at all you have to assemble a critical mass.
heat or explosive?

Just when I thought the poliboard couldn't get any more deranged, they start a thread on how crazy the OT war thread is.

I mean, there's supposedly a video out there of a Russian soldier's corpse being devoured by a group of pigs. But I don't need to see that.
Who does? All I’m saying is that gory, violent things have been on the internet for a while, and you can become completely desensitized to that sort of media. The most fricked up clips absent this war is all the Narco footage coming out of Mexico.

The majority of that "Ukrainian" aid probably never leaves the Beltway.

I see the talk of Russia possibly using tactical “battlefield” nukes is gaining steam. There’s only one problem with this. The Russian army can barely pull off fighting a conventional war as it is. Add in the fact of having to carry out combat operations in a nuclear/biological/chemical (NBC) environment, and they’d lose what little battlefield cohesion and capability they currently have.
The Red Army of the 1970s and 80s was trained and equipped to fight a NBC war. But the Russian Army of 2022 is neither trained nor equipped to do so, especially after the horrendous losses it’s taken to it’s best trained divisions. It’s merely a shadow of what once was.
I’m not saying it’s impossible that Russia might go with the nuclear option. A cornered animal will do desperate things after all. But, unless they’re even more stupid than we supposed, it would be a huge mistake to do so.

These days, yes. A shpere of Pu is compressed by an explosive lens into a critical mass. Not the only way to do it of course. You could simply bring two sub-critical pieces together. That's how Little Boy (the Hiroshima bomb) worked.

I've seen articles written in the context of nuclear terrorism that claim just slamming two uranium plates together would do it, and simply dropping one plate onto another from a few feet might be enough. No idea if it's true.

I clicked on that just for a few giggles. They of course have several loons who believe Russia has been saving all their good equipment and troops for what is now going to be the real war.
Also saw the talking points about Russia doing this to outsmart NATO. NATO countries are now almost out of war equipment and Russia will "take off the gloves".

There's an English guy with a youtube channel who just verbally describes narco videow without showing anything. He has a lot of subscribers.

It's true if the plates are of the right mass. As I said that's essentially how Little Boy worked. However you can't do that with Pu, only Uranium. With Pu, the bomb would blow itself apart before the pieces got close enough together to produce a decent yield. Pu requires that you start with a barely sub-critical sphere and compress it into criticality. For a variety of reasons Pu is the preferred fuel over U so that's the method now used.

My fear is that the better the Ukrainians are doing, the better the chance Putin lets a few tac nukes fly to get Ukraine to the treaty table. His conventional forces certainly aren’t making it happen.
And the Ukrainians are doing very well right now.

Russia has long since lost any battlefield cohesion. But it may not stop Putin. He might be thinking of some kind of shock and awe gambit to get everybody's attention. Popping a nuke surely would, whether it actually achieved any operational success or not. He could even just conduct a "test" on an existing missile range. It would make him even more of a pariah but it would also ratchet up calls for a diplomatic solution by several orders of magnitude.

Or Putin could be deposed by people that think he isn't crazy enough and they could start popping off nukes. Either way would galvanize the entire world against Russia.

Well, as I said, a cornered animal will do anything so it’s possible. But if he does, then he’s completely divorced himself from reality akin to Hitler in the Führerbunker underneath the ruin of Berlin circa April 1945.

Does Ukraine have nukes or possibility of getting them?

Do you know the channel name? I’ve always been fascinated/horrified by the cartel savagery. The stuff of nightmares. I’ve always stayed far away from the actual torture videos, but I’d be curious to check this guys channel out if what he does is just talk about specific incidents.

The Polish army would be an immense problem for Putin if it came to that. One thing is for certain, aside from Russias nukes, their military is in self destruct mode right now where the world doesn’t fear them anymore.

When Ukraine declared their independence after the fall of the Soviet Union, they immediately became one of the world’s largest nuclear powers. However, in exchange for (1) Russian promises of non-aggression and (2) security assurances from the west, including the United States, Ukraine gave up its entire nuclear arsenal.
There’s rumors they stashed away a few small “suitcase” nukes. But that’s never been confirmed.
(The most odd things in this thread get downvoted. I expressed no opinion on anything and only stated known facts. Yet, somehow that’s objectionable. Why? At least state your disagreement.)
