I’m planning a two-week trip to Italy. Flying into Milan, splitting first week between Lombardy and Liguria. Second week in Tuscany. Perhaps train to Rome (for flight and maybe a night or two). 4 adults.

I’m thinking 4 nights in Milan and day trip to Lake Como. Should I stay a night or two at the lake instead? Any recommendations for places to stay in Milan?

Probably 3 nights at Cinque Terre. Stay in one of the villages? Which one? Porto Fino instead?

Probably 7 nights at a house in Tuscany. Day trip(s) to Florence. Any recommendations? Would love something authentic and obviously interested in food and wine. Better to split nights in the city?

Any other reccs welcome.

1-2 is plenty

Lake Como is worth more than a day trip, and Milan is just another city IMO.

Hope you’re doing well dirt.

Do not spend more than one night in Milan. Four nights is wasted time.

Milan is a just a big, modern city. Unless you are going for fashion week or high-end shopping, there's no reason to spend much time there.

It's worth a day to see the cathedral and The Last Supper. I'll be there for 48 hours in June for the first time in 30 years and going to try to do those things and maybe see a performance at La Scala, which is truly one of Europe's greatest opera houses.

But almost all of Milan's old buildings were bombed to smithereens in WWII. It's nothing like Rome, Venice, or Florence, where amazing, beautiful old buildings await around every corner.

There's no charm.

La Canonica di Cortine This is the place you want to stay in Tuscany. It is wonderful. I have stayed there twice, most recently in 2018.

When we went to Lake Como we stayed in Lugano, Switzerland which is a short drive away. Lake Lugano is the next lake over from Como and Lugano is right across the lake from the Italian border. Beautiful place.

Stay in Vernazza In CT...2 nights is fine, hit the Blue Marlin Bar both nights.

With 14 days in Italy, I’m seeing Venice if you haven’t seen it. Rome is a full 3 days to do properly with the Vatican. Florence belongs too, but you’ve gotta budget days

However, it’s your trip...can’t go wrong with two weeks in Italia

Thanks to everyone for the replies. Not looking to do a full tour that would include Venice, Rome, etc for a few reasons.

Understand the concerns with Milan. Maybe I will look at staying at the lake and a day trip to Milan for shopping. We have another day in that area for family history. I was thinking day of shopping, day for family, and day trip to lake. But we don’t have to be in Milan.

For CT area, my thinking on three days was one in the villages, one on a boat, and one on the beach.

And rather than stay in Florence, I was thinking day trip in. And possibly same for Sienna.

I’d prefer to avoid changing hotels a ton and am looking for a lot of downtime rather than trying to see a ton of different cities.

Abita, thanks for input. Trying to get up your way in April. Will give you a shout about a beer.

The villa I recommend above is about half way between Florence and Siena and both are an easy day trip as are many of the smaller hill towns. The first time we stayed there we did Florence as a day trip. Last time we spent a week at the villa then three days in Florence before taking the train to Venice.

We have also done the Cinque Terre as a day trip from the villa but that is a long one.

Keep in mind I’m just giving my two cents on CT, and others may feel very differently, but CT was my least favorite stop on our last Italy trip.

It’s beautiful, but during the day you’re dealing with cruise passengers and others taking the train in for the day. The best part of CT was at night and early in the morning when it was quiet. I personally wouldn’t spend more than a night or two there if at all.

For Tuscany I would recommend staying in Monticchiello. My wife and I stayed in an AirBnB there for a few nights as our home base. We made a day trip to Florence & Siena, spent one day driving the Val d'Orcia and hitting the various hill towns (Montepulciano, Pienza, etc.) The last day we spent about half a day in Cortona on our way back to Rome to fly home.

We stayed in a medieval tower in Monticchiello which is owned by a lady who also owns other properties and an amazing restaurant in town. We are planning to stop by and see her on our next trip back in '23.

that's a lot, 2 days/one night was enough for us. There's a good walking tour of the Last Supper and Castello Sforzesco

Flying out tomorrow. Spending 10 of 14 days in Milan per the board’s recc.

Seriously though, would take food or experience reccs in Como, Cinque Terre, Sienna or Sorrento. Local and laidback are of interest. Several boat rides, cooking classes, and wineries lined up but would take more and/or local guide reccs or other suggestions.

And I realize that’s a lot to cover in two weeks but here we are.

Dirt, check out Lake Garda and the town of Sirmione. Guts out into the lake on a peninsula. Fantastic walking town and some nice cafes near the castle. East of Milan about an hour drive.

My nephew and I spending only 2 days in Milan this September. That seemed sufficient from my research. We are doing a day trip to Verona before flying to Paris to meet my wife and friends there.

Please post a report on your Milan highlights.

Buon Viaggio.

I just returned from a 21 day, solo first time visit and decided to focus on the big four + CT/Amalfi. Started in Rome (4 days), CT (Riomaggiore for 3), Florence (3), Venice (3), Naples (2) and Amalfi (Maori) for 3 days. Then back to Rome to fly out.

I work in the arts, so naturally had to see as much art and architecture as possible. And of course, that was mind blowing and a bit overwhelming at times.

Florence was probably my favorite, especially with a day trip to the Tuscan wine region. Rome was the busy, magnificent icon that I thought it would be. Even went to an AS Roma match, which was an experience. Venice was beautiful, but so crowded. I wish I would have added a day in Florence and dropped one from Venice. Two days is plenty of Cinque Terre, but I did love my little airbnb right in the middle of the bustling Riomag. village. Some good food and friendly people. The ferry system works well there. Amalfi ... thankfully i stayed in a small town and not in Positano. Too many people there. Had some michelin level meals in that region. The surprise was Naples .... i almost cancelled the two nights there after some negativity toward the city. But I found it to have the best energy of the cities - gritty, chaotic and lively. Reminded me of a SE Asia city. And of course the art and pizza. I'm glad I went there.

Overall ... it was a nice first visit to get the gist (the train system is so incredibly efficient/easy) ... I would like to hit the northern areas and Sicily/Sardinia next time.
