I have a friend that got hurt and lost parts of his first 2 fingers on his dominant hand and he's trying to find something he can do (he was a welder). He mentioned buying a dump truck to drive if he ever gets an insurance settlement.

Is it profitable? If it is, I don't mind floating him the cash to buy it and get going. I trust him (like all my friends) with my wife, with my life and with anything I own.

Lots of “expenses” that can make a 80-100k income look like 30k.

A guy down the street retired and used some savings to buy a dump truck and now runs a business just hauling junk away for people. He makes pretty good money but it’s also fairly inconsistent and he might go a week or two without a job.

Would you trust him with an acetylene torch?

That's called a hobby.

One truck? You can make a living but it’s not gonna be grand.

What state? Insurance can be really expensive. Could be easier to run a hotshot service. An F-450 and a heavy haul flatbed trailer could bring in a pretty decent payday for someone willing to hustle.

That’s where I’m from. Born and raised.

There’s no shortage of work for a dump truck but there is a lot of wear and tear. It’s constant maintenance. If he’s a welder then he can at least do some of it himself

Not sure what the rules are there, but trucking is where the majority of the contractors in LA, especially New Orleans, get their DBE points from. Your friend a “minority “?

Truck driving in general is a very good paying job. FYI

Driving the truck? not so much.

Owning a bunch of trucks, especially doing big jobs for contractors where they need a constant supply of material for a 12 hour shift. Print the money.

TONS of these trucks run illegally, not even with plates... and somehow they get away with it.

It would just be him as an owner/operator.

Why? Has he looked into driving for someone else? I’d look at that option first as they are in demand.

Dump truck isn’t really a work on your own time sort of job. You are likely going to have a small client base and when they need you they need you.

I mean compared to something like a heavy equipment like tractor, stump grinder, back hoe, etc that you work small contracts for residential type of jobs.

It can be profitable but it's definitely not a guarantee. Finding a good steady job with a reliable and trustworthy contractor is hard to do. Fuel is expensive and insurance in Louisiana is ridiculous. If you don't do your own repairs and maintenance it's hard to turn a decent profit. Plus your always one major breakdown away from having 1000s of dollars worth of repairs.
