Can someone explain how it works. He is retiring while under contract with the saints. Should he only take a 1 year break, do we still have his rights which would require a team to trade for him to coach somewhere else? I’m sure this has been discussed but there are so many threads I couldn’t find it. Just curious about the compensation the saints could get out of this

That contract is just put on hold until he comes out of retirement

At that point we own his rights and we will probably allow him to go look for a team, but they have to trade us for his rights.

The amount of compensation depends on how hard of ball the franchise wants to play with the best coach they've ever had. If I had to guess, unless we are an absolute disaster next year, they will probably cave and let him go for low compensation.

Everywhere I've read, it says he's stepping away, not retiring. That's going to come into play later, I think.

You could absolutely be right. Fans think he has some plan already for Dallas or another team in the works but think how that would have to play out. Whatever that team in the fans mind is would have to lose next year.

Dallas would have to sabotage McCarthy and the team so that they do not improve and make a run in the playoffs. If the Cowboys have playoff wins next year then that job is not open for Payton. Same is true for every other team. If they hire a new coach this year then that job is not open next year and if it is, then that is not a organization Payton would want to go work for.

Now lets look at a rturn to the Saints. DA takes over and Payton goes to do TV. If DA succeeds as HC, Payton likely stays in TV. If DA fails as HC then guess Payton is the likely target for return with a new franchise QB and cap room for a 2006 style rebuild. Now that is a situation he and any coach would be enticed with.

If? When. Cowboys blow it big time, Jerry Jones does not give vote of confidence to his coach. Payton "retires." Do the math.

Somehow, the NFL and Jerry Jones is going to grab Payton and the Saints will get the shaft again. Everyone in the National Media will be lauding the hire to the Cowboys, while the Saints morph into the Detroit Lions.

There is no somehow. They cannot have him unless we give them to him, unless they want to wait until 2026.

Love Sean and everything he did…

But it’s business Gayle better play hard or straight up block him from ever coaching again.

Again we will somehow get the shaft. Payton rides off to la la land 1 or 2 years gets the grand treatment, celebrated as the greatest, comes back and coaches somewhere else.
Gayle and Mickey let him go for pennies on the dollar. Not being Debbie downer but a long time Saints fan can sniff this out a mile away. Convenient time to leave this franchise and if was L.A. or New York he wouldn’t be leaving.

year doesn't matter. The contract stops, saints have his rights.

This is incorrect.

He cannot “wait out” his contract.

It could be 2037. If a team wants CSP, they have to trade the Saints for him

What happens to the saints's leverage once they hire a new coach and signs a contract? What if Payton then states, "I want to coach again", the saints no longer have a position for him to return to without buying the new contract out and firing the new coach. What coach would want to sign with this scenario a possibility?

He’s never coming back to saints
Need to check what other teams got for similar deals

That is what I am waiting to see. I bet Gayle and Loomis cut Payton loose for pennies on the dollar as a Thank You to him.

They are not going to cripple him at another location by taking a 1st and a 3rd or so on, which is what should be the compensation.

The conversation starts with a 1st round and then whatelse.

They won’t let him go for nothing
And plenty of teams could care less about giving up a 2nd for him

Well the last time a coach was traded, Tampa gave Oakland their 1st round pick in 2002 and 2003, as well as two 2nd round picks (2002, 2004). 8 million in cash was also thrown in the deal. Keep in mind Gruden hadn't won a Super Bowl yet.

The thing that was unique about that situation was the Bucs were a fully built team with veteran leaders and were battle tested in the playoffs. Ownership and the front office felt, right or wrong, that Dungy plateaued and a new coach could push their loaded roster over the hump.

Neither Dallas or Chicago is on the precipice of a Super Bowl with their current rosters and to get Sean Payton they would have to give up a lot of high draft picks that will be needed to build up the rosters. It might be a deal too rich for a lot of teams.

Sounds like a good plan
2 firsts
2 seconds
And some cash since Payton was second highest paid coach in league
