Don't get any type of attack dogs....they are dangerous, even properly trained.

They are instictively aggressive and small children and small pets are super vulnerable.

Don't do it.

Oh, and separation anxiety. Good lord, those dogs get depressed if you leave without them.

We have had shepherds around small children, smaller dogs, cats with no problems. I think key is either introduce them to the household as young dogs, or make it clear that this cat, dog, or child is “yours” to your shepherd and he or she will adopt them and protect them, too.

Lost all credibility at:

have a genetic disposition to attack jews and blacks

Because there were hordes of Africans in Europe back then right?

I remember growing up my father told me that he hated GSDs. I never really understood until right before he died he told/ described his experience during WW2 as a Nazi Prisoner of War in Stalag 7A, in Moosburg, Germany. That’s when he told us about the Nazis / SS troops had GSDs and they would sic/get them to attack the POWs, and the dogs would rip them up. He said they were mean and vicious dogs.

I was driving and passed a german shepard with a small little dog in someone's front yard years ago. I thought to myself, "aw, thats cute that big ole dog is playing with that puppy". In a split second the little dog was in the GS's mouth being swung back and forth like a rag doll. Dead in a second. I thought, "Well, that ain't cute."

I love GS but the shedding alone is a deal breaker for me. We have a golden doodle and a Pyrenees-poodle mix. The poodle side takes care of the shedding.

Maybe a GS-Poodle mix would be optimal. Both are very intelligent and have watch dog tendacies. A standard poodle isn't a small dog at all, so the size of the dog would still be big enough to intimidate/protect.

is “attack dog” similar to “assault weapon”?

Had a white GS. Best dog ever. Huge baby when I was home, but would flip a switch if it was just my wife and daughter.

One more thing I love about Shepards is that they don't tend to wander. My dogs stay home and have no inclination to leave the house unless we are going for a ride.

WTF. That's one of the fricking dumbest things I've heard in my 72 years.

The average person never really considers that. They just want a tough dog, that is loyal. When it bites a guest, or kills a neighbors pet, you always hear how they've never shown those tendencies before, but 99% are lying. It's akin to the mother on the news, defending her kid who just got caught commiting some heinous crime. No way I'd own a breed of dog, that statistically, is proven to be aggressive towards people. I've got to much to lose, and there a plenty of other breeds that satisfy my want for a good pet.

I've owned 2 German Shepherds. One was a 4 year old I got from a breeder and one was a pure bred 18 month old I rescued after Katrina from a German Shepherd rescue site. Both my kids were young when we had them and I've never had an issue. Most dogs are a reflection of their owner/training. GSDs are without a doubt the most intelligent dogs I've ever owned, and I've had some smart ones. Both of mine were females and very protective, but not in an aggressive manner. More like "hey, repair guy. I'm right here watching you and I will rip you to pieces if you frick up" kind of way. Never growled at strangers or even looked like they would bite. I guess when you are a bad arse dog bred for protection you don't have to constantly announce it. IDK, but after putting the last one down last year when she was 13 (old for a GSD) I'm already looking for another one.
