LA's 2022 budget will likely include funding for bridges in Baton Rouge and Lake Charles

The Advocate is shilling pretty hard for Governor Edwards since this is the state legislature and federal government's existing earmarks and funding stream pretty much requires additional match. But I'm still glad that it's finally happening. Note that the state's funding share is a fraction of the total cost - the rest will come from the federal government. In the case of the Baton Rouge bridge, a lot of funding will come from special financing backed by future toll revenue.

You can read the whole article at the link. It's poorly written and at least mildly slanted. But the theme is that these two new bridges appear to have yet another funding source as the state finally gets serious about building them.

The effort for a new structure in Baton Rouge has been discussed for years but the lack of money and proper planning have been key stumbling blocks.
The governor is also expected to propose additional funds to build a new Calcasieu River bridge on Interstate 10 in Lake Charles.
That price-tag is roughly $800 million.
Two things have changed the funding outlook.
The state expects an additional $1.6 billion in revenue because of federal aid sparked by the coronavirus pandemic and better than expected state tax collections.
In addition, Louisiana is in line for about $6 billion over five years for roads and bridges and other infrastructure from the $1 trillion bill that cleared Congress last year.

There has ALWAYS been sufficient funds. The problem has been LA politicians wanting their pockets lined first, bridge built second. It’s disgusting.

They’ll probably move them to be built somewhere a bridge isn’t needed so some politician can hire his brother in law to build them.

I’m dreading the day of the “unforeseen tragedy” of the I-10 Lake Charles bridge collapse that nobody saw coming.

Good thing they wont have any weight restrictions.

Ones without weight restriction?

Probably.
They've narrowed it down to 17 potential alignments. I think an idea of what they can afford might help narrow it down to 1-2 sites. LINK
I like the crossings that are just south of Addis. But I won't be upset if they have to build it downstream a little, so long as it isn't too far south to really make a dent in traffic congestion.

What about the Lafayette loop????

the new I-10 bridge over the Calcasieu ship channel was initially advertised as a PPP which means the contractor has to fund the construction. Unless DOTD has changed this, which i doubt, this is a bunch of lies.....

You mean the 49 expansion? I think they have a funding stream for it already.

structurally the bridge is sound. but its a money sucking maintenance nightmare, not to interstate standards and tons of other things.

It will never be ready in time

I might be able to drive across this new Mississippi River Bridge when I'm 70.

Do they have to build a high in the sky bridge over the Calcasieu? I've been over that I10 bridge a bunch and have never seen an ocean going ship on the north side.

Not sure. Maybe there was something upstream from the bridge that used to see particularly tall vessels?
I think Lake Charles will eventually need a crossing around Moss Lake too.

There are inspections every other month or so on the bridge. They would have shut it down by now if there were serious issues. But I’m glad to know that things are being set in motion to get it replaced. I drive over it every time I go to work. I would be lying if I said I trusted it 100%.

No. There’s no reason for it to be that high. It was originally built that high for ships to go under but the project that was supposed to accommodate those ships never happened? I’m not 100% sure on that though. I remember growing up, I heard it was to allow warships to come through, but it was built in ‘52, so that’s not correct.

It was built in 1952. There may have been plans to keep the channel at depth and navigable early on. But it was never used. I grew up around there and I just never saw ships up there. I have three memories etched in my mind about that bridge. My mom and dad used to tell me there were crossed guns on the rails. I didn't notice those for ten years. My mom also drove an old Chevrolet with a clutch I believe. She alway yanked my chain by telling me she hoped we would not just roll backwards down the bridge in a traffic jam. We didn't. Finally I had a job that required that I drive a medium sized truck with a standard over that bridge often. It wasn't a problem. But there were traffic halts at times and I really got good at keeping that truck moving in the right direction with clutch management. No drifting backwards. I don't think I could do it now.
