Bills should have held/tackled every receiver in the last 13 seconds.

Wouldn’t even need a pass rush. Just two waves of defensive backs. One wave at the LOS tackling everyone and another wave behind. Once the clock gets low enough then regular prevent mode. Can’t let these guys run around free.

This is correct. I think maybe the Pats once did something like this.

BTW this is the type of strategy I live for.

Yep… press coverage and a wave behind then to try and bat anything down. For a league that is all about analytics this seems like an obvious one

And they should have squibbed the kickoff
Posted on 1/23/22 at 9:16 pm to emoney
Yet none of the coaches will be asked why they didn't do that.
Posted on 1/23/22 at 9:20 pm to BHS78
Why not? They held every Chiefs defensive lineman that entire last drive in regulation and nothing was called.
Posted on 1/23/22 at 9:21 pm to 45RCRoy45
absolutely.
a squibbed kickoff probably leaves them with less than 10 seconds.
then just one or two holding calls and they likely only have enough time for a hail mary attempt.
if you tackle the receivers the qb is going to take even longer to try to find someone. i doubt he would expect it and clock it. he might eventually take off to run, but they likely don't have enough time to run for a big gain.
i wish coaches were prepared for this.

you play a cover 6..... 5 man under...NO RUSH
tackle and hold to the ground all 5 skill players
watch the QB hold ball and time expire.

Of course there is the slight problem of having rules that state the game can not end on a defensive penalty.
Posted on 1/23/22 at 9:30 pm to 88Wildcat
ok so you do what i said. times expires. QB takes off running since everyone else is tackled and he is tackled 10 yards downfield by the 6 behind the front 5 holding guys down.
so no time left?
ok fine.
makes them try a 65 yard hail mary now versus a FG.
much better sitiation

Game can’t end on a defensive penalty
Posted on 1/23/22 at 9:37 pm to emoney
Harbaugh is the only one in the league that would try this.
I believe there is some kind of rule about intentionally working against the spirit of the game or some BS, but it’s not a bad idea.

Right, but they would only have time for one more play (not in FG range, because of defensive holding) So then you play prevent on that last play..

I am almost positive I have seen the Patriots try this before.
They tackled all the receivers on like b2b plays. You exchange penalty for less time.

No time gets taken off the clock if the chiefs return man fair catches the squib and if down between the 25 and end zone the ball gets advanced to the 25.
So there is more risk for the Bills if they fair catch the squib ahead of the 25. In that situation the chiefs could have had the ball beyond the 25 with 13 seconds left.
Bills played the last regulation kick off right.

They can't fair catch the kick if its rolling along the ground. They can fall on it of course but they get the ball at that point. That said, the type of kickoff did not lose them the game.

They would say something about this being against the unwritten rules or some crap
The Ravens did this before to run out the clock at the end of the game but they were on offense

He’s already done it. They were on offense though. And it worked.
