I came across this today while browsing OSU. I remembered the incident but not the details. Like Witte later made amends with Taylor and Turner.

Was this Corky Taylor thug arrested?
quote:

It began with 36 seconds left in a game the Buckeyes led 50-44, when Witte was fouled flagrantly by Minnesota’s Clyde Turner while attempting a layup. Sitting on the court, Witte reached for the hand of Gophers’ 6-foot-9 center Corky Taylor, who offered to help the Ohio State 7-footer to his feet. But as Witte rose Taylor kneed him in the groin, dropping the OSU big man back to the floor.

Baseball hall of famer Dave Winnfield was involved in this as he played basketball in college.

There were no arrests. The conference suspended Taylor and Behagan for the balance of the season. Minnesota asked for 2-3 games. I

A little more of what happened in later years .....Witte never was the same, as Merchant said. He was drafted in the fourth round by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1973 and played for part of three seasons, averaging 3.2 points per game before retiring as a player. He operated a sporting goods store for five years before becoming a minister. Ron Behagan was drafted by the Kansas City-Omaha Royals in 1973 and played seven years in the NBA, averaging 10.2 points per game. In 2012, he was sentenced to three years probation and ordered to pay restitution for theft from a 68-year-old Alzheimer’s sufferer. Corky Taylor worked for the city of Minneapolis; became a youth coach; reconciled with Witte, who became a friend, and died in 2012 of lung cancer. Bill Musselman coached the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Minnesota Timberwolves, among 13 coaching positions that he held. He died at age 59 in 2000 from heart and kidney failure, due to kidney disease.

Wagar was not so fortunate. Attacked from behind by Gophers center Dave Winfield, now better known as a baseball hall of famer

I have always thought Winfield was a piece of shite. This only confirms it.

Bill Musselman was one of the biggest pieces of shite in American sports history and he caused this.

I was so happy when he died young.

Ohio State forward Mark Wagar looked up just in time to see Goldy Gopher ball his fist. Or paw. Or whatever you call the Minnesota mascot’s punching mitt.

Even the mascot was throwing down.

Wow I had never heard of this, but it sounds like one of the most bush league incidents of all time. Helping someone up and then kneeing him in the groin…

I remember when that happened with Winfield in Toronto. I think I was 8th grade when it happened and couldn't believe that was real.

The biggest piece of shite is that a-hole that came off the bench to stomp on the head of a player already lying on the ground. He could’ve fricking killed or permanently damaged that dude. WTF.
