Sounds like time for a rewatch.

Walter is one of the great TV characters.

One of the very fews shows that had a good series finale.

FIFY.
Also, as always I have to rep one of the best M/TV Board threads ever.

Should I check this show out? I've only vaguely heard about it.

Always looking for something good to watch.
Never seen it before--think it will hold up minus the "nostalgia" factor of having watched it before?

Yes, it is a really fun show.
Warning: It starts off as sort of a standard "Monster of the Week" show, but eventually becomes much more serialized and creates a pretty good universe. It really is such a fun show, with a LOT to dissect. Pay attention.
Be patient through the first season or two.

All of this. But I'll add that even the MotW type episodes early on are still really interesting and cool. And some of the plots/things pop up throughout the series, so it's not like they are a waste of time anyway.
Joshua jackson is solid as Peter. Anna Torv is one of the most "plain hot" chicks ever. Astrid plays a great "straight man." And Walter Bishop is one of the weirdest, most eccentric, best characters of all time.
The stories and plots are cool. The settings the show creates are interesting. And it has one of the best finales ever.
It's just a great show, pretty much start to finish. I couldn't recommend it more to anybody that's even remotely into sci-fi.

I actually moderately enjoy motw style television.

Fringe is a must-watch, extremely well done.

Top 3 series all time for me. Even did a rewatch when it was on IMDB tv, which has terrible servers and unending commercials. Glad it’s on HBOMax at least for a while. Now I can do a rewatch on a decent service.

And I will go to my grave with the belief that John Noble's performance as Walter/Walternate is the greatest multi-episode acting performance in TV history. Brilliant and subtle, across multiple personality changes.
The supporting cast was equally brilliant - Lance Reddick as Broyles, Blair Brown as Nina, Michael Cerveris as September, the fantastic Kirk Acevedo as Charlie - not to mention Jared Harris as Jones. And I won't spoil the surprise for the uninitiated by revealing who plays William Bell
The finale is deservedly praised here, but the entire final season sets it up so beautifully. Definitely a must-watch.
