The music world changed the day Smells Like Teen Spirit was released.

Most of his stuff was written without a purpose.
How could you possibly know that?

shite, he has basically said such. Most of his songs are bits and pieces of his poetry that have been mashed together with three chords.
Kurt was an abstract expressionist (basically) and his lyrics are open to various interpretations. People attach personal meaning, then fall in love with the song.

Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder, and Dave Grohl immediately come to mind.

i think a pretentious musician would be one that uses a lot of complex time signatures and polyrhthyms a la maynard keenan. nirvana never made anything but simple grunge and had the aesthetic to match
eta: like that 42 & 6 song or whatever, thats a pretentious song/title in my mind

Someone wasn't around for the early 90s grunge - hell I was in junior high when Kurt and Lane were alive and they were absolute monster rock stars. I always saved up some change from my lunch each day and had my cousin who had a car swing by the mall to pick up tapes for me. One of the first ones I got was Nevermind in 1992. What a dumb take OP

Yeah, I doubt many people understood the content. Its about shadow work, a Jungian concept. I imagine most people just liked the sound.

Tom Morello.
It took all of about 30 minutes of listening to his show (now SHOWS) on SiriusXM to realize how much of a pretentious douchebag Tommy The Commie is. 1000000000000% sick of hearing his commercials on damn near every rock station they have.

Rage Against The Machine seem pretentious as frick while 100% worshipping at the altar of corporate greed. Maybe ironic is a better word for them though.

Nevermind was released in ‘92 with several songs in top 10. They were selling a half million album copies per week. He wasn’t dead yet and actually released another album before his death. Hard to say they hadn’t “taken off” before he died.

Eddie Vetter may actually be more pretentious.

I know someone who was a higher up at JnJ Pharma and they sponsored Pearl Jam concert as Chrohn’s Disease Fundraiser. All proceeds were being donated and Vedder was on stage cursing big pharma and their evil doings during the concert. Mike McCready was the reason for the arrangement and someone living with Chrohn’s a very nasty disease especially 20 years ago when fewer Tx were available.
