Despite being told by our parents and grandparents that you must be twice as good to advance half as far, we still get the okie doke when we exceed expectations.. Not a pity party, just another reminder of the different standards to which we are held #NFL
Ummmm...while I don't agree he should have been fired, did Culley exceed expectations?

Not that I follow them very closely, but the Texans were actually better than I thought they should be given everything that had gone on.

Texans must have heard some positive news regarding Watson's lawsuits. They're going to pay off all of his victims and make them sign a nondisclosure agreement.
FIFY!

Why are people in this thread pretending like this is crazy or something? He had no real qualifications for the position in the first place, keeping a guy because he didn’t fail as hard as you expected is a how you make bad decisions worse
Yeah, it was a dumb hire in the first place. Plus, based on in game coaching decisions this year, there was really no chance he was going to stick.

It’s crazy you would hire a coach with the expectation he will only be there for a year
It would be crazier to keep him knowing it’s not working out just because it’s only been a year. Sunk Cost fallacy.
They worked in the same building as Culley for an entire year and saw him up close and thought he couldn’t get it done. Their jobs are just as tied to the success of the program as his is. Maybe they are wrong and he’s a great coach. I have my doubts, but another team is more than able to give him a shot to prove that correct.

Honestly, until Easterby can be run out of the building (Which he won’t) it’s all a lost cause.
If they ever become successful it will be in-spite of whatever he does.

They were expected to win 1 or 2 games.

So they let Bill o Brien tank the franchise for years and then fire this guy so quickly?

Yes and much of it without their expected starting QB.

I don’t think he’s a great coach. It was the least desirable job last cycle which is how they ended up with him and I’m not sure why it would be different this year. I don’t really have an issue with them firing him, I have an issue with the ownership of the franchise firing him but leaving in place all the other elements that forced you to make this hire a year ago.
The entire franchise needs a hard reset culturally that hasn’t taken place. Until then any success is going to be fleeting and more a product of luck, in my opinion

Culley was hired to fill the spot for a year while they worked on getting their next guy from the Patriots tree. I called this immediately after he was hired but it still doesn’t make it right. Culley brought in a good staff and did incredibly well considering what they were playing with on their roster.
Caserio did hit on each of his 5 draft picks this year which was another bright spot for the franchise.

BOB won 9 games in his each of his first 3 seasons, and eventually won 10 games and 11 games in following seasons.
If I had to guess, that’s probably why he got a little more leniency than a career position coach that went 4-13

So who will be the guy in Houston now? I do not know it they go New England unless its Flores, which makes too much sense.

I mean the main element that forced them to make this hire was the disaster that BOB left them with roster wise and followed up by the Watson mess, which is still technically in the building but not really their fault per say why that is the case.
They would’ve had their pick of the litter for coaches if either Watson didn’t get into the trouble he got in or if BOB didn’t bleed the program dry of money talent and assets (which lead to Watsons trade demand)
And yeah Easterby being in charge is a total farce, but I don’t think that has much to do with Culley or this decision

Flores and McDaniels seem like the most obvious choices.
Texans tried to tamper to get McDaniels to come with Easterby and with Caserio when they made those hires, and I imagine his work with Mac only increased their view of him. And the pats were targeting Mills if Mac wasn’t there so could see him wanting a chance to develop Mills potentially.

I mean the systemic dysfunction in the organization and O’Brien bleeding them dry are directly related. I’m not even sure what you’re arguing with me about

I do not see McDaniels leaving again. I think he is the new Ray Handley or Gunther Cunningham. Long time loyal assistant to previous HC who gets the call.

Just like colleges keep hiring Saban (hey what tree did he come from again?) assistants in college and that never works
