Thing is, StB changed a lot since Katrina and is continuing to do so. Back in the "good ole days" there was a thriving industrial sector in da Parish that really doesnt exist anymore... or at least anywhere near the mid to late 20th century levels.
I really have no skin in the game. I'm only in the Parish every so often these days, but at least on the surface, it seems like a no brainer to me. Could be more to the resistance though.

Correct... and not only that... they are starting to turn on those who are at least willing to have a discussion. As well as asking why more people aren't totally against it.
The SOS group is very much showing a mob mentality right now.

Why would they do this? PP has no real tax base and horrible infrastructure you would have to maintain. But NO and JP are dealing with bad infrastructure maintenance right now, so why would they add more stuff?

SOS has also tapped into a coalition of environmental justice and social justice organizations. Strange bedfellows for sure...

Reopen MR. GO. The trip all the way up the river is too long. There’s a flood gate now. Those rock dams don’t do anything except mess up fishing.

That kinda died when Kaiser shut down. Since that huge job loss... industrial jobs have kind of been on an even line.
The facts are this:
1) If this project was being proposed by the St. Bernard Port, it would have more support
2) If this project was located purely in the Violet Slip area, or even in the industrial zone near Chalmette Refining / the main port area, it would have more support
3) Many, MANY people here do not want to grow. They do not want progress. They don't want more jobs or more residents.

Then they should move to a small, more isolated town…not a suburb of New Orleans.

Yup.
Tell me... when have the elites of this community given two craps about the poor black people of Violet? For 100 years, no one cared about them or Violet Park #2 or the cemetary, and especially not the school which is dramatically underused while other more "white" schools are bursting at the seems.
And just like Mississippi casinos were involved in funding the no casino group in Slidell... it would not surprise me a bit if some of the SOS funding / support is coming from port interests in Mobile and Houston.

A significant number of St. Bernard Residents do not believe they are part of the NOLA Metro area. This is a fact.
While there are commuters who live here... a significant number of residents are perfectly happy if they never have to leave the parish for anything.
They do 100 percent think they are a small isolated town and not a suburb.

That would be false… this is mainly about the container traffic generated which would be too much for Judge Perez, St B Highway, and Paris Road

They need to be upgraded anyways.
And I’d hope we’d be exploiting the rail links as much as possible.

this sentiment is growing throughout the country and i don't think it's a bad thing. for so long we were brainwashed into GROWTH and JOBS at all cost, but not every place needs to grow or have more jobs.
however, st bernard parish is NOT one of those places.

I've seen a lot of comments saying if it was needed here it should be at that location. Of course many others are saying no port, no where at all.

And hardly anyone lives there.

They are a very industrial and port-centric suburb at that.

Port NOLA and SoS have been horrible at the messaging.
Port NOLA has failed at the PR game big time. True or not it the optics make it look like the port is trying to cram this down the throats of the residents of St. Bernard.
No one has come out and said anything about the infrastructure which needs to be built. No one has said how this will mess with property values. No one has said anything except it'll create jobs. Ok what jobs? For how long?
It's a cluster from both sides. And I say this as a transplant to St. Bernard who commutes into NOLA every day.

There's a plan to run a new rail spur from behind Jackson Barracks down behind the 40 arpent canal all the way into the backside of the proposed facility.

That would be awesome. Maybe add an access road for trucks to connect to Paris without upsetting the natural suburban beauty of Chalmette.

Well for one we never have had a public vote on it…

Yes you did. You voted for the people who made the decision.
No, these people on the Port NOLA Board who made the decision are appointed by the Governor. And you are being obtuse; obviously the locals want a vote on the issue itself. The people of St. Bernard did not vote for Edwards and now his cronies come in a take over part of the parish.
That said, I think the port in The Parish is a great idea because it is downriver of the city and has decent interstate access and rail access. If it was on the westbank truck traffic through the city and on the CCC bridge would skyrocket.

This.
St. Bernard is a different place and the Port hasn't understood yet how to deal with the people here. I think there was another tread that discussed this.

Port is saying it's not their responsibility, it is the state (roads) or railroads.
The port is throwing everything into "the studies will tell us what to do". In my opinion the port has made a huge mistake by not having some of these studies done ahead of time... and by basically throwing everything into being determined through the permit process.
There are waaaay too many questions for this point in this process... and in this community, where there is a lack of factual answers, rumors and fake news will rule the day.
