2022 is the year we need the full 85 (81)updated OP is way wrong.

OP is wrong and should be called out for it. We have 80 now. e
I will never understand why folks, here, are saying that we don’t need the full 85* (see below) scholarship limit. This is the year that we need the full 85.
You can’t just add transfers and stay at about 72-75 players and hope they pan out. You need to add another transfer with that transfer and find out which one plays the best at LSU.
For instance;
If you add Eric Reed and Mekhi Garner because we are woefully low at cb but we end up with say, 5 functional cornerbacks, you don’t call it quits because you say “nah, we are fine at cb now”. You may wish we were able to get the full 85.
That is fool-hardy. One of the two may be homesick by august or simply cannot play at an lsu level. Then you’re back to getting thrashed by a hapless KSU because you have three cornerbacks. (Don’t forget you’ll have other transfers and opt outs)
THIS is the most important year to get to 85*. (81)
*totally understood that our 25+7 won’t afford us that opportunity. But we keep reading here that:
1. We don’t even play 85
2. We can be fine with 72.
Wrong.

The same people are saying we don't need 5* or out of state kids to win lol.
You NEED top 5 classes and these 5* blue chip athletes.

Because we have proof that we got lucky that Mashburn sat way behind Five Star Gilbert on the depth chart.
If you take 9-12 players off the roster, there is no legitimate backup to replace them if they get injured, get homesick or are just horrible attitudes.
Some of y’all can take 72, I would take 85 every day.

This is a weird rant. Most of the people predicting where we will end up are just acknowledging that more guys on the current roster will likely leave or be pushed out and we won’t be able to get to 81. That’s not the same thing.

Nice strawman. No one is claiming that.
However, the transfer portal has changed the math.
A lot of those players in the 65-85 range were developmental players that may not play for several years. So you have 20+ players absorbing roster spots that won't play.
In the portal era, those players may not stick around or will be surpassed by transfers.
I certainly don't have the answers, but I think we will see coaches manage rosters completely different going forward.

Yeah, I don't think anyone is arguing we shouldn't have a full 85 scholarships. It's just probably not going to happen in one year.

Yes. Me too.
This is a thread addressing the fact that people like me bitch and moan about the transfer portal.
It has decimated this team to the point that we cannot even add the 25+7 to get to the 85(well…81).
The responses we hear are,
-No team needs 85
-if you have to rely on a 4th stringer then you are in trouble.

I’ve never seen so many strawmen in a single thread.
Impressive really.

I’ve definitely seen at least a couple of people claim exactly that. Not a lot, but they exist.

LSU is not winning jack with a roster full of 3 stars and "Rudy" walk ons. The occasionally story of success is the exception not the rule. And the full 85 roster needs to be back after the next recruiting season.

So I don’t expect you to go thru every thread, seeing if I am correct. I should have placed this link in op. But I could see those guys getting get upset they I’m calling them out. I’m not, though.
So no. Since you called me out on strawMan argument, I have to provide a link to tell you otherwise.
Straw men
Here
And here
So now don’t act like it has not been said.
However in the same thread I have to agree w ith you on this…..

This is the most important part of 85. Just look at Alabama and Uga oline.
While some schools are playing three upperclassman on offense of line and two others sophomores or juniors are starting with them, some schools will have to start a freshman right away ( it doesn’t work that way. We were hoping that Dumerville would be able to come in and play right away. )
Not at Alabama and Georgia. They have five stars waiting to play behind five stars. These five star backups are getting physically & mentally prepared to play when called on due to injury or graduation.

I don't think it even matters. No way we can get to 81 or 85 this year. We just won't be giving as many former walk-ons scholarships this year.

We don’t play 85 though. We do need 50+ who can play.

I’m sure that Kelly has a plan, I’m more hopeful now than ever. Top to bottom he is going to get the most from his team.

Agreed. No reason to not ever max out available depth. Even if it is local walkons, max it out. No reason to have wasted roster spaces.

Roster management will be a key thing, ven moreso than before. Player buy in, which I guess could be considered part of roster management, will significantly factor in as well.
COnsidering where BK came from, I would say he will probably be better at this than many.
