Seems a commander 1911 would be a perfect high dick carry handgun

home defense - shotgun with birdshot, low power
a 500 S&W will not stay in the same room, it wont even stay in the house, could end up in some other persons house.
decades ago in st. martinville, la there was a murder suicide. 44 mag was used in a brick home. guy shot his wife then himself. round that killed wife was never recovered. round that killed him passed through his chest, 3 interior walls, exterior wall and buried about 1 1/2 inches in a tree outside.

Won two World Wars with it as the official side arm. What else do you need to qualify it as not overated?......

I'm using a 12 pump with 00 buck for my primary home defense weapon. I feel more comfortable that round will stop anyone from attacking.

It is not overrated. It is a great cartridge. A big heavy bullet that will penetrate some things a 9mm won’t. But it limits capacity in a pistol so much, you might as well carry a .357 revolver. And a .357 magnum vs. .45 acp is not a real comparison.

I load 10mm , 357, 44.
The orig Norma load for 10mm true it was slightly reduced by Saami. Back then, only the Bren Ten could handle it. ( Miami Vice ).
Today, we can push the limits to 10th of a grain.
No. 9 seems to be the best powder for 10mm.
10mm was around before 1986, but it was the April 11 1986 FBI shootout in Florida that re-birthed the 10mm.

The 45 Acp became popular in one of the world wars. In the Phillipines, in the trenches, drug hyped enemy would charge in the trench and the 38 was not stopping them.
The idea of getting hyped up on drugs and charging goes back to the viking days when it was termed

When it comes to stopping power, really there is no good handgun. With any caliber, they will die, eventually, but the idea is to instantly stop the bad guy. Dirty Harry had it right. The 44 magnum will do it. Its just not practical for suburban law officers. Shoot thru carry further bullets are a liability. Defense attorneys hollaring slaughter.
Anybody who really deeply studied the 1986 Florida shootout, if Agent Dove would have hit Platt in the same place with a 44 magnum instead of that 9mm, it would have been over.

more like other modern cartridges are under-rated...

To each their own I would say, if you can shoot it accurately and maintain the necessary control to be efficient and safe then go with the .45. Personally the design of handguns and handgun ammunition has come a long way and generally speaking from a CC perspective i personally carry a M&P Shield chambered in 9mm. With the right ammo and practice its more than enough gun.

On paper I dont see how a 45 wouldn't be more effective than a 9mm. You aren't getting shock and trauma from either one, both are going to penetrate about the same, but one is making a MUCH bigger hole.
I like big holes in the barrel and I like all 45's. The "only because they don't make a 46" guys are a little misguided in its mythical stopping power though. Pinnacle effectiveness out of a handgun is a 357 magnum SJHP at nearly 1500 fps.

No, but you can't appendix carry a .45ACP;
You can and I do sometimes. 1911 commander for the win.
limited to 8 or 9 rounds but you can definitely appendix carry a .45
1911 actually carry very well. The slide and frame are not wide at all.

Special Ops use the .45; that should answer your question.
Maybe some of them do. DEVGRU/ST6 uses 9mm. Same with MARSOC. Rangers too.

Hasn’t been long ago Marsoc went away from a pretty cool looking 1911 to Glock 19

Yep, the Colt M45A1. And you know it wasn't because of budget either since they're SOCOM.
