Found out today that my stepson (USAF) will be stationed in Ramstein, Germany. My wife is already talking about going to visit but tbh, Germany doesn't interest me much. Switzerland, on the other hand, is a place I'd like to visit. Anybody familiar with those areas or have any suggestions?

Germany is a beautiful country with really good food. Switzerland is an even more beautiful country with mostly mediocre food. Both are a lot of fun to visit.

Though I'm genuinely curious to hear why you're interested in Switzerland but not Germany. What does the former have that the latter doesn't, in your mind?

Don't know about the ramstein area specifically but I went to Germany a few years back and had a great time. Switzerland and Austria are also awesome. Looks like ramstein is close to France so you could hit that up too.

I kinda grew up at Ramstein.

Well, Kaiserslautern to be more specific.

Start researching Germany and you will be amazed. I thought the same thing but Germany is incredible.

Among the most castles in Europe for instance.

Great great wine country. Beautiful villages. BEER. Cool cities. The alps. On and on.

Ramstein is a pretty good haul from Bavaria.

But vert close to Luxembourg and France.

Plenty to do and see there though. Take a Rhine River Cruise.

It’s not that bad at all. Couple of hours. Easily doable.

The Alsace region of France is close by and cool. Colmar and the Wine Road

Just left Ramstein last year. Was a great 4 years.

You can definitely go to Switzerland from Ramstein if you guys plan accordingly. Paris is close by. Go to Trier, Heidelberg, Frankfurt, and Koln. There’s also a resort for military in Bavaria called Edelweiss. From there you can go to the Zugspitze and even the Olympic Stadium in Garmisch where Jesse Owens first competed for the US. There’s also an amazing hike to a gorge if you follow the road behind the grounds. Also, Belgium and the a Netherlands are a must. The Dutch are amazing. Amsterdam is only like a 6 hour drive. Go!

If you aren’t excited then you should be. Germany and Europe iin general is slowed paced living and its amazing.

Will your son be living off base or in the dorms? What’s his job and what squadron is he going to? Depending on your answers, I may be able to reach out to some friends to make sure he’s taken care of.

You can email me at payne.ryan4@gmail.com if you would like to talk offline.

I saw them live a couple times. Hell of a show, didn't understand a word they were saying, though. It was like they were speaking a different language.

Southern Germany/Austria/Switzerland all have great Alpine villages. I love to travel and Bavaria is the only international destination that I’ve gone to twice because I like it so much. Only area outside the US that I’ve visited that I could see myself living comfortably.
