The anecdotal evidence is that Omicron is highly contagious but less likely to cause significant harm and death. One of the questions researchers are trying to answer is, What is it about Omicron that makes it less dangerous?

This New York Times story reports a finding that Omicron is less likely to enter and do significant damage to the lungs. What we are also seeing is that it is less likely to cause loss of taste and smell, meaning less risk of nerve damage.

This is all positive stuff.

Yep. Ironically the same thing that is causing the vaccine and natural immunity to be less effective is also causing the virus to be less virulent

Is it possible that the vaccine and natural immunity played some part in that?

I think by this point it's more than ancedotal evidence. I'm pretty sure actual numbers from South Africa and Britain have borne out that it's less severe.

I'm sure someone has already said this but it seems pretty obvious that the answer is, like most viruses, it has evolved to become less deadly in order to spread better.

Delta was still 50% of cases not a week ago. CDC messed up the omicron math, so possible you didn't have omicron.

Sounds right. A ton of family members came down with it and several ran high fevers- nothing like the “mild symptoms” people have been describing.

Honest, non-troll question —

I’m no expert at all and don’t claim to know how this all works… but is it possible that with as many people who are vaccinated, the virus mutated into a less serious variant due to vaccinated people being infected? In other words, could it have been affected by the vaccine in a way that caused it to weaken?

I really don’t know if that even possible but figured I’d let all the Covid experts here on the OT answer for me.

worse than a head cold for me, but didn't last very long at all. the body aches were miserable, once they went away within a day tylenol has been enough to keep me feeling pretty good
