Never underestimate the stupidity or apathy of city/state/federal/nonprofit employees.
quote:
Moran-West embroidered Zeus’ name and her cell number into his red collar. If he got lost, the contact information was right there.
“I’m still blown away by the fact that there’s a dog with a collar, with a phone number – and nobody saw fit to call,” said Moran-West’s attorney, Jonathan Rosen.
That is the heart of the allegation in Moran-West’s lawsuit against the city’s Department of Animal Care and Control. Its workers found Zeus when he escaped from the backyard of Moran-West’s dad’s home in January of last year.
Moran-West said she never received a call from Animal Control before it turned the dog over to Fetching Tails, an animal rescue agency.
Zeus was then adopted by another family.
“I was very depressed,” Moran-West said. “I cried for two weeks.”
“We were told by Fetching Tails Foundation that they reached out to the family and the family said no,” added Rosen.
No, the family would not return Zeus to Moran-West. The lawsuit argues the city and Fetching Tails violated Illinois law, which requires animal care agencies to make every effort to find owners of lost dogs.
quote:
Rosen showed us Animal Control’s intake card. On it was the dog’s name, Zeus. If the city workers had his name, Rosen argues, surely they saw Moran-West’s phone number on the collar.
Never underestimate the stupidity or apathy of city/state/federal/nonprofit employees.

Meh...my dog went missing a few months ago. The animal control people here were awesome and found him a few miles down from me 18 hours later. I searched all night the night he left and all morning the next day and would have never found him if not for their help.

At least the dog wasn't euthanized.

What kind of people would not return the dog to the owner after hearing about this? Damn

She left the dog at her dad's house and it escaped through the fence.

I’m going with:
They lied and never contacted the other family or
The other family asked for a refund/expenses etc and the rescue company refused

It really is. Just give the girl her dog back and go get another one. It's not like there is a shortage of them

Mayor Lightfoot ensuring city services are staffed with pure incompetence

Terrible, shitty people.
They should be ordered to return the dog. It’s not theirs. It is legal property of the original owner and that can be proven by the collar.

Here's a little bit of insight of how things might have happened.
First, kudos to the animal rescue organizations that work with local animal control centers.
These groups will pick up many of the adoptable pets and immediately start looking for fosters or permanent homes. These groups charge $100 or more for a pet. It seems high, but none of these organizations are operating in the black.
Zues looks like a golden retriever, a popular breed. Therefore, they knew they could adopt easily.
Secondly, and this needs to be addressed.
Many of these rescue groups, not the animal control pound, will make sure the pet goes to only good homes and good conditions. Perhaps, just perhaps, Zues' original owners may have not had him in ideal conditions: kept outside in Chicago winters, tethered to a tree all the time, water not available, etc.
I don't think this is the case here, but it's just possible.

That looks like a Golden Retriever I have little doubt that the dog was out the door in days to the rescue agency that gave the animal control worker the most money.

The dog was adopted. How much could that have cost?

What kind of piece of shite person would not return someone’s dog to them. Lawsuits incoming motherfricker.
